Leave the glass covers off IMO. Cuts back the light by 10%(so Ive read), adds heat to the tank and prohibits gas exchange.

Keeping the glass covers off is prefered. Just make sure that the bulbs are high enough that they won't get splashed and shatter.

It is better to keep the lids off for all the reasons pointed out already.

If you want to put something over the top to prevent fish from jumping out. then go home depot and get some egg crate defuzer panels in the floresent lighting section.

Doesn't worry about dust, hair spray, cleaners, etc. unless your house will be really dusty from remodeling or full of chemicals in the air due to some massive house cleanings. You'll want to be careful when your using cleaners around the tank so that you don't spray anything into it though. If you'll be doing some remodeling or major whole house cleaning, you can temporarily cover the tank with the glass pane, a bed sheet, or plastic and leave the lights off. As for fish jumping out, it can happen easier when a tank isn't covered, but putting egg crate over it helps. The benefits that your corals will see from not having the glass top can be very big if your tank is under lit and you'll be able to control the tank's temp during the summer much better without the glass top.

I've read where glass tops can reduce lighting from anywhere between 8% for a very clean pane to 20% for a "typical" glass pane after only a week or two of use after getting water splashes on it.
