Default Update on Nova Extreme Pro lights

Hey everyone!

I bought this light fixture in January of this year and have come to find that at about 4 or 5 months, the current bulbs that come in the fixture do need replacing! It was nice to have the bulbs come with the fixture and it IS a great fixture, just not so high quality BULBS. So, I'm going with the UVL brand..... thought it was intersting that my kenya tree started to 'climb' up the rock! Also, not sure what mix I'll try yet but, I ordered 2 blue actinic 420 bulbs, 1 12k 50/50 actinic/daylight bulb and 1 10k daylight. I'd love to let you all know how the corals react to the new lights, especially the 12k in the mix.

*Ian, i'm pming you to make sure you know about the bulbs as you just got this fixture and you can plan ahead!

Dana, take pictures before the bulb change, so we can see the difference with light, and how your corals change and are affected by it.

I'll post some pics tomorrow, the lights overall are visibly losing their par now, the whole tank just looks a little darker than normal. I'll post the pics and keep record of the corals and algae as well.

Ian, I do have the 36 inch fixture, love it, just not the bulbs it came with, expected a little more life out of them.

Ok, here's a pic of my lights as they are weak now, and a pic of my favorite fish, the orange spot shrimp goby!

I'll be getting the new bulbs in a few days, will post more pics then of before and after. I'll also throw in one from right after I got the set to compare.

I have about a half gallon evap every day, which isn't that bad! But I do not have a canopy or hood on my tank, my husband helped me make temporary braces for my light fixture so it sets about 8-10 inches above my water, with the plexiglass cover on it. Adds pretty much no heat to my water as well, which is nice.

I do use the stands that came with it, they're just setting on my two braces instead of the tank because my tank is 2 inches too long for it to be on my tank!

So, I put two of the four new lights into the fixture and BOY what a difference! The pics probably don't do it justice but, I think it's pretty close! I believe the blubs that come with the fixture are ok, but I'm definitly going to stick with these UVL bulbs, the difference in the actinics is big, the corals zooanthaealgae really pop now! Ok, here are the pics!

Before...

After replacing a current 10k w/ a UVL white actinic at 12k and a current 460 actinic with a UVL super actinic 420

just actinics (2 old current and the 1 UVL new)

Ya know, I got to looking more at those two pics and you really can't see that much difference but in PERSON, it's so much better! I'm just not real good at taking pics of my tank yet, the lighting is SOOOO tricky to get accurate!

Overall, the purple in the coraline is popping out a lot now, and with the actinics on only, the corals flouresce a lot more, very pretty! Was nice to wake up to this morning!

And, after having them on today, my frogspawn and kenya are telling me 'thank you for giving us better light', they look more open and colorful today than they've been in a while!

Sorry about the two pics not looking much different from each other! I was bummed about that! I'm 100% sure though that these uvl bulbs are just better, either that or the mixture with the 12k white actinic, not sure! Still experimenting with what bulbs I like!

Ok, another little thing I've noticed, the 420's are more blue than the 460's, and I think the tank looks better with the 420's. The bulb actually looks bluer itself compared to the other two still in there... Going to add the other 10k UVL and 420 super actinic UVL bulbs tonight. I'll try doing another top/bottom before and after pic comparison, maybe there will be a more notable difference...

Now, I have:

2 460 actinic (current brand)
1 420 super actinic (UVL brand)
2 10k daylight (current)
1 12k white actinic (UVL)

they alternate with each other, actinic, daylight, actinic, etc.

Ok, I have learned that the 420 actinics are more purple than blue and the 460's are more blue... so, after adding the two new 420's and keeping the 1 460 in there, the actinics are just too purple to me! So, I'm going to go with 1 420 and 2 460's... not sure about the daylight bulbs yet, right now i have a 12k and 2 10k's... I may stick with that mixture or throw in another 12k and keep 1 10k. Can't get a good pic of the actinics but will post a new pic of the daylights on later today. Thought the purple hue was interesting though. (It makes my tank look reddish because of all the coraline in my tank so it may look different after adding more corals!)
