I've been looking at skimmers, and have been recommended to Coralife more than once. I have a 55 gallon right now. No livestock yet, still cycling. (LR & LS). Does anyone have any ideas on Coralife?

I also have a 55g reef and I have a coralife skimmer. I would not recomend them unless you have a smaller tank. They do not make too much froth.

Do you have a sump or is this going to be a HOB (Hang-on Back) skimmer? If you have a sump I would recommend one of the ASM G3's. Great skimmer. If you are going to need a HOB you could go with the Aqua C remora. SInce you have a 55 I would recommend upgrading the pump to the Maxi-jet 1200 instead of the rio 800. Another good HOB is the Deltec MCE series. You could go with the 500 or 600. General rule of thumb you want your skimmer to perform double you tank volume. So if it says rated for tanks up to 110 gallons (usually it's 120g) your in the clear

P.S. I haven't decided whether to do a HOB or a sump. I've heard a sump is recommended... is either more beneficial?

I have the Coralife superskimmer 65g HOB and it seems to be working alright and it's pretty quiet which I like. Picked it up new for $90 shipped from ebay. It did take awhile to find the sweet spot for it to work properly, about a week. You just have to keep adjusting and adjusting and adjusting and adjusting and adjusting and adjusting. I mean you don't wan't to come home and have poo water all over your floor lol so make sure you have time to watch it till you get it were you want it.

Hang on skimmers are easily seen and I think they take away from the tank. +1 on the AMS just get one rated for a larger tank for future upgrades. Thumbs down on coralife.

I like hang in sump skimmers because you cant see them and the pumps not in the tank, it looks alot better. I recommend the coralife 65 gal Aquarium Protein Skimmers: Coralife Super Skimmer Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer Coralife skimmers are very good skimmers IMO.

Hello allykay, I also have a 55 gal. and am using the coralife super

skimmer (model 125) for 65 gals. It works great. If it isn't producing

froth or foam then it isn't adjusted correctly. Once it is broken in it

performs good. Mine is in the sump. The important thing is the water

level between the pump and bottom of the out tube. Here is a site

showing the manual to give you a heads

up;http://www.marineandreef.com/v/vspfi...er_skimmer.pdf, go to

page 3.

I've never used a coralife skimmer, but their needle wheel versions are supposed to be good for the price. Their venturi version is supposed to be bad.

In-sump skimmers provide the best bang for the buck. If you have a choice between in-sump or HOT and your sump has the space, get an in-sump skimmer. You'll be able to get an in sump skimmer that outperforms the HOT skimmer for the same price or less.

I recently got a used 125 model and had a hell of a time adjusting it. there is a mod that worked well for it.
