Default generators-

if you live in areas where outtages happen, put a generator on your "must have" list.
it's not the norm here. as a matter of fact, it hasn't happened in 3 years.
tuesday night we had a storm roll through, and we lost power at about 8:00pm. i got up at 4:00am and went off to work thinking "it will be back on any minute".

meanwhile, i inspected the tank with a flashlight and it seemed like everything was ok.
the corals looked fine, and the fish were all hiding in the rocks...sleeping i guess.
the only thing that was visually out of the norm was that the snails were all positioned towards the upper part of the tank.

at about 9:00am i called home to see if the power was back on, and my GF informed me that it was not, and that all of the fish( 6" sailfin, 4" hippo, 3" yellow mimic, and a couple fairy wrasses)were at the top of the tank "gasping for air".

i left work and rushed home, by way of LOWES, and picking up a 5000 watt generator.

by the time i got home 90% of my fish and inverts were dead. the water was cloudy, but at a decent temp(80).

i'm not quite sure how fish can live in bags while they are shipped from fiji to LA, but my livestock clearly suffocated.

i've preparing to do my second 30% waterchange- the first one smelled like rotten eggs.

I live in a place where we lose power during rainy season about three or four times a week, alot of people here use a abttery powered air pump with a small air stone. It gives the fish enough air to survive a couple days if need be, but I wouldnt trust a big tank to it.

I have had outages happen twice since putting up a tank. When it happens all else matters second...yes even work. Without out some form of agitation to mix oxygen with the water you and your tank critters are screwed.

Sorry for your loss. Reefing isnt fun some times.

thanks peeps. i'm down, but not out.
so, now i have a 4" maroon clown, a 12" engineer goby, and a 4" algae blenny who made it through.

what do you all suggest-
purple tang, chevron, and achilles?

i'm open to all stocking ideas. except anything over a thousand dollars per fish, that is...
