generators- if you live in areas where outtages happen, put a generator on your "must have" list.
it's not the norm here. as a matter of fact, it hasn't happened in 3 years.
tuesday night we had a storm roll through, and we lost power at about 8:00pm. i got up at 4:00am and went off to work thinking "it will be back on any minute".
meanwhile, i inspected the tank with a flashlight and it seemed like everything was ok.
the corals looked fine, and the fish were all hiding in the rocks...sleeping i guess.
the only thing that was visually out of the norm was that the snails were all positioned towards the upper part of the tank.
at about 9:00am i called home to see if the power was back on, and my GF informed me that it was not, and that all of the fish( 6" sailfin, 4" hippo, 3" yellow mimic, and a couple fairy wrasses)were at the top of the tank "gasping for air".
i left work and rushed home, by way of LOWES, and picking up a 5000 watt generator.
by the time i got home 90% of my fish and inverts were dead. the water was cloudy, but at a decent temp(80).
i'm not quite sure how fish can live in bags while they are shipped from fiji to LA, but my livestock clearly suffocated.
i've preparing to do my second 30% waterchange- the first one smelled like rotten eggs. |
