Default change in thinking

about ten years ago I had two saltwater tanks one 38 gal. and one 37 gal.The larger was a small reef with a wet/dry filter I made and the other was an all fish type. A friend of mine has begun to start a 75 gallon tank and says that the school of thinking has changed as far as wet/dry filters and lighting?I have since moved and upgraded to a 90 gallon aga tank and want to make the tank look as if it is a reef that meets a kelp bed type with silk plants( or live if possible) and live rock etc. .My question is I understand the wet/dry change but how much lighting would I need if only half the tank has live rock? I will have 90#s of rock in the tank just concetrated on one half? Can I use a single mh pendant or do I need more wattage ? please help

Today the ideal setup is cheato in a refuge that is plumbed into your sump. Plants are nice, but rock rumble is not encouraged. You only need enough lighting for whatever corals you want to keep. So if you are keeping SPS on one end of the tank and low light corals on the others, just get a Pendant for that one side.

Hey Ryan thanks for the help. For now the only thing I would like tyo do is an anemone and a clown fish .I don't plan to use rock crumbles but was thinking about live sand as a base.you mentioned a cheato in the sump, what is a cheato ? do you have any reccomendations protien skimmers ? I understand you get what you pay for .I know the live rock will serve as the bio filter but will one pendant be enogh light for this type of system?

Lighting must be matched to the coral you will be keeping. There are a lot of types available: T-5's, metal halide, flourescent compacts, etc.

Macro algae is like plants in that the algae absorbs nitrates. There are several kinds available and people keep this algae in a separate area called a refugium. That is so it can have its own lighting and so its easier to control the growth without impacting the display.

There are a lot of choices for skimmers, pumps, etc. I encourage you to do searches on the internet.
