Default Quiet One Pumps

Does anyone have any experience with Quiet One Pumps? I'm looking for a brand that puts out around 800gph and runs cool, and they clam to run very cool. They are cheaper than other pumps so I was curious if they were worth it.

I like my QO pumps (2x4000), but some of the QO pumps may have issues with restarting after a power outage. You won't know if you have one of those pumps or not unless it's been used for a few months and then gets turned off. One of my pumps has always worked great, the other one doesn't like to restart without a thorough cleaning after being shut off. If you need a reliable, internal, high flow pump, stick with a Mag and Eheim pump and figure out how to solve heat issues if it comes to it. If the pump not restarting isn't a big concern, like if you are using two return pumps like me, then a QO pump may work good for you.

I used the old style q1 for about 6 years and was pleased with it. When it quit I replaced it with the newer one. It's not nearly as quiet, but still much less noise then gen x or supreme. Heat wise I think all 3 are fairly close. I'm guessing maybe 3 or 4 degrees in my system.

I have never owned one but I've read where quite a few people said they had problems restarting after their power went out and came back on.You may want to look into it before you purchase one.

I have used many pumps over the years, and have found you almost always get what you pay for in a pump. Just because it works good at first, don’t mean it will be 6 months down the road. A nice happy medium I found in pumps are the Danner Mag Drive pumps. They are made for internal or external use and are good heavy duty pumps at a reasonable price. I buy them from marine depot at the link below with free shipping!!!

Danner Mag-Drive Supreme 9.5 950 GPH Water Pump, 500-1000 GPH > Submersible > Water Pumps > Saltwater Aquarium Supplies

O.k. I'll chime in here. I recently (4 mos. ago) went to a Mag 7 rated at 750 gph at 4 feet and since the tank is in the living room noise was a concern. After literally researching for days and talking with my trusted compadre at one of my lfs haunts I finally went with the Mag 7. Start up after shut down was an even bigger concern and every review said it starts right up after a shut down and it has. I am real happy with it. It had a little hum at the beginning but settled in and you can hardly hear it. I am satisfied.

Start up after a power outage isn't really to much of a concern with my tank. I have everything plugged into a very large battery back-up, that will keep everything running for a little over an hour in the event of an outage. I read an article on here yesterday about the warmer climate affecting the temperature in our tanks, which the temperature of my tank going up several degrees was the reason for thinking the pump might be heating the water up, and it listed a few methods to cooling your tank without the expence of a chiller. One of the methods was to leave your AC on about 74 degrees all day. I did that and now the tank is sitting around 79 to 80 degrees, so i think the increase in temp was just because of the temp in my home. With all that being said, haha, I think I'm going to stick with the pump I have for now, but if I do decide to change it I think I will go with the MAG 9. Thanks for all the input.

You'll spend a lot of unnecessary money cooling your whole house to 74 degrees all day. Buying a smaller chiller would pay for itself in no time at that rate. Before that though, I would make sure the tank's top is left uncovered, have some powerheads pointing up at the surface to cause surface agitation, and use some fans to blow air across the surface of your tank and sump. If that isn't enough, you can try lowering your photoperiod time, if your corals can handle it. I don't know what you have for lights, but if you have halides, most corals can to great under 4 hours of MHs per day.

I have the top uncovered, powerheads pointing at the surface, and a fan blowing across the sump. None of that brought the temp down until I lowered the temp in the house. I haven't tried to decrease the amount of time the lights are on however. I am using VHO lighting. The actinics are on for 12 hours, and the actinic whites are on for 8 hours. I've been monitoring the temp through the day and the lights seem to only vary the temp about 1 degree. I'm sure a chiller would pay for itself though, I just don't want to buy one. The tank hasn't needed one until this summer, and I keep the house temp around 79 anyway, so maybe the power bill increase won't be to large.

Would be WAY cheaper to by a chiller then to run your AC all day, unless you're running like a 16 SEER AC unit, which uses next to nothing in electric.
