Default Do you need a filter?

I read a lot of articles online, in magazines and books on reef keeping. I am getting a 50/50 split opinion on if you need a filter for a reef tank. Some say it's useless and a nitrate factory others say yes but carbon filter only and some say the water will get cloudy without one.

What do you guys think?

I'm going to follow this one... I'm about to ditch my canisters that I use to supplement each tank as they also have sumps. I have noticed that when I do use a polishing pad in the canisters the water is razor clear.

Love to know what other's think, I'll check back!

The only mechanical filter I have on my tank is the foam sleeves over the 3 overflows. I clean them 2 or 3 times a week. I can see where you might want to use one to run carbon or something.
