Default LR rubble in Emporer 280 w/ carbon in cartridge

I am just in the process of cycling a new 47cube that I purchased. Then stand only has 11" x 13" of storage. I purchased the 280 because of cost, flow and the fact that I used one with a Remora on my 44 corner hex w/ great results. I am considering going to a canister later, after I get my skimmer and Sunpod 250 HQI.

I have noticed that alot of people remove the bio media in their canisters and replace it w/ LR rubble. Could I do the same with the 280 and just use the included cartridge to add carbon or maybe carbon and phosphate remover?

While it is cycling that is how I have it. It flow into the filter, thru the LR and then thru the cartridge on the way out. Is this execptable? IF not it will be replaced eventually, just wanting opinions.

I also have a Koralia 2 & 4 moving water. The tank is only 20x18x30. The cube shape creates alot of turbulence. I also have a 7" DSB and approx 50lbs of LR

I have a thread started in the step by step thread as well, if you would like to follow along w/ my progression.

Thanks in advance for advise

I think it will work as long as the flow isn't interupted by the LR. I use an emperor 400 in a 55gal tank that is like a refugium for sponges, micro feather dusters, spaghetti worms, pods, and a lot of other things that live inside a plastic cartridge that is for bio media.

I removed the LR from the 280 today and just replaced it with the regular filter cartridge. Fighting the LR to get the cartridge in and out was a PITA. I have decided to go with a good canister and use the LR rubble as biomedia in place of bio balls. I will prob add some cheato and an led light to help with nitrates
