Default home water filtration equipment

I have a "OmniFilter Whole House Water Filter" laying around, never used. It has a flow rate of 5 gpm and filters out to 2 micron.

I figure this is better then nothing as i dont have funds for a RO/DI yet. I just want to make sure it wouldn't do any harm, idk how it would tho.

Oh and the filter cartridge say "Reduces rust & sedement" and "Improves taste, reduces odor & chlorine"

Is it a single unit or does it have multiple cartridges on it? It shouldn't be a problem if it removes sediments and chlorine, after all, most RO/DI units do not produce 100% pure water.. Very close to it though!

I would run the water purification system for a couple hours to flush the RO membrane. Then use a test kit to find possible traces of NH4, NO2, NO3, etc. to make sure its functioning properly.

FYI ----> 5 gpm = 300 gph = 7,200 gpd = <---- A very fast (home) water purifier! Be ready for this with proper plumbing plus adequate buckets and towels haha.

Thanks for the fast reply. It is a single cartridge filter, about 4-5 inches in diameter. I was thinking about running it and testing the water to see if it was usable, I guess I will be doing that.

What you have is a basic carbon block filter. It consists of activated carbon and a pleated or spun poly mechanical filter. It will remove chlorine, some heavy metals and organics, and reduce turbidity. It will not remove phosphates or nitrates, though you could add another filter inline for that.

Hi Scott, when you save a little, check out "The Filter Guys". I got a 5 stage ro/di for $135.00 I think. I only replace the filters (not the membrane) every 6 mos. and I pack my own DI (cheaper) when needed. Those guys are very helpful and will take time with you.
