Default is this normal

Hi
Not sure what it's called but at the bottom of the clear tube that outs the water back into the tank, there is a block of cork that is getting thick black what looks like fluffy stuff gathering on it. Is this normal and should I leave it or clean it off. pls see attatchment

Is the "cork" the rectangle shape with hints of beige on it? Did the entire piece once look that color? I would leave it for now, if it is accumulating something then it must be doing its job. However, it will eventually need to be cleaned to avoid flow restriction and parameter spikes. I would wait to see if the whole thing gets covered, then take it out for maintenance. Make sure you use RO/DI water while cleansing, as the sponge/cork will soak up unwanted dissolved minerals and Chlorine then release them into the water column.

Yeah it is the rectangle shaped bit, the fluff now seems to be getting released into the main tank, the water flow seems to be picking it off gradually then it regrows.
