Default lighting upgrade but not to grow coral

I was just wondering if I could upgrade my lighting so that my tank is brighter but I dont want to grow coral or get algea growth from it. I have a 55 gallon tank. Is it possible to have two or three regular florescent bulbs and not have a problem with algea growth.

Algae needs 2 things to grow - light & nutrients. If it only has 1 it won't take hold. You can increase your lights just be sure to keep the nutrient levels low by running a skimmer or by regular water changes. Clean-up crews work wonders as well.
