the skimmate or skimm-off the accumulates in the collection cup, about how thick should it be?

It can be either "wet" or "dry" depends on how you want it to skim..

I like it semi wet, fluffy foam, ends up being dark brown, murky, STINKY water

You definitely don't want it looking clear - the darker & murkier - the better!

yeah you dont want it to wet though, i heard about wet skimming increasing ORP though, also depending on bio load is how you should skim personally, wet for not so heavy and dry for heavy

I've attached a pretzel jug to a drain hose on my cup, it works great and I don't have to chjeck it as often. My out put is generaly dark green and smells like *** . This I consider great, I do still get heavy flow at times, and the only reason I can think of is the water level being to high after water changes, I do this once a week and try to keep it regulated with a piece of tape on the sump.
