Default Pump Regulation

I am getting ready to set up the plumbing on a new tank. I have a pump rated for 1800 gallons per hour. My tank is going to be a 125 gallon reef-tank. Can I put a ball valve in just after the pump to cut down on the GPH? I was going to get a 1200 gph pump but I was told the filtration system will need more that that to keep good water flow and exceptional filtration. Would a ball valve help me to to keep the gph a little less tht 1800 gph but more than 1200 gph? Or should I just let her do her job?

Thanks,

Thats 14.4 times the tank volume. It doesnt sound to bad to me.some reefers like 20 to 30 times the tank volume for flow. I would say that if the fish are scrunched up against the tank wall you went to far lol.

I guess if they look like they are swimming upstream like salmon I'll know to cut it back. haha Does the ball valve sound good, so I can adjust the flow IF I need too?
