How do you have the return lines going to the tank? Are they submerged in the tank? If so, drill a small hole in it just below the surface of the water. When the pump stops the tank will only drain down to the hole.

My return line has a hole drilled in the last elbow before the pipe leaves the overflow point down so the water squirts into the overflow. This is actually above the water level. If the pump goes of the pipe fills with air and the siphon is broken.

it was 3/4" PVC and i tried the drilling of the holes below the surface and water went everwhere because the water evaporated a lot over night, so i put in new plumbing with check valves, which allow water to flow one direction and it works great, that way i didnt have to drill holes!

Just hope the check valve doesn't get stuck in the open position.
