| Are we wasting our ground water supply for a eazy fix ? Our Grate Grandchidren would be left with nothing to drink If every one in the US was to goto RO water in there home. This is from NDSU Agriculture Disadvantages of reverse osmosis units RO units use a lot of water. They recover only 5 to 15 percent of the water entering the system. The remainder is discharged as waste water. Because waste water carries with it the rejected contaminants, methods to re-cover this water are not practical for household systems. Waste water is typically connected to the house drains and will add to the load on the household septic system. An RO unit deliver-ing 5 gallons of treated water per day may discharge 40 to 90 gallons of waste water per day to the septic system. read the rest here Treatment Systems for Household Water Supplies - Reverse Osmosis

| In my current neck of the world I would advise one of 2 things: 1. Use some sort of water purification system because the Rio Grande is nasty. Our local contaminant includes uranium, which can cause more problems for our young and old (or so the news says). OR... 2) Burn El Paso to the ground. I don't think people should be living here anyway.

| i saw the unit your talkin about. i can't remember the name of it for the life of me but its supposed to work just as good as a conventional unti without the waste! its expensive as hell though. the one that i was reading on was about $720 for 40 gallons a day! i would imagine that the price is down now but who knows.

| I have very little waste water coming from my unit - maybe I have it set up wrong?? Tested the water and it's fine. I also collect the waste and use it to water plants etc...

| The Filter Guys have a unit designed to lessen the wastewater. I dont think that anything affordable is going to have no wastewater.

| That looks like a good alliterative to a RO unit. Where you looking at the unit for the tank filtration? They claim you don't need a skimmer if you us it. Or the one to filter water for drinking and to use in a tank. They claim to be better then RO

| A typical RO unit produces 4 gal of waste per every 1 gal of pure water, so that means that 20% of the water is pure. The remaining 80% can be used for anything that you have a use for in your house if you decide to collect it. Some people use it for watering plants and shrubs, and others have found ways to use it for their laundry. If you have a septic system, the waste water is going back into the ground so eventually it makes it back to ground water. If you are in a city sewer system, more than likely, the waste water ends up getting dumps into a river somewhere so it does remove the water out of the local water table for the short term. However, long term, the water gets returned through rain so you aren't perminantely removing the water. If I lived in an area ofthe country that the ground and drinking water supply was low and I was on a city sewer system, I'd do everything that I cold to eliminate the waste water. But there isn't a water shortage in my part of the country and I am on a septic system so, as much as I hate to say this, I don't worry about salvaging too much of my waste water.
