Default Purple Up???

I've seen many people using purple up on there rock to get the process started faster...I would not mind doing so to some of my live rock because it is not as purple as some of the others. I just want to know what everyone thinks about PURPLE UP!

Purple Up is great... I use it BUT be very careful and test A LOT because it lowers your PH very rapidly. My PH was around 8.4 at its peak and dropped to around 7.7 when I used it for a week. It does help with calcium levels and contains trace elements but watch your PH while dosing.

what would be a good method to counter react on the ph drop?

Is marine or reef buffer good to use my lfs recomended i use it with very water change and then some, actualy they said i could use the marine buffer everyday, I only used it long enough to raise and stable my ph when it dropped just a lil bit (before i was doing my own testing) trips to teh lfs every few days,,,,,,,,,,

I would encourage every one to use purple up when salifert starts makeing a test for it.I personally feel that unknown levels of anything in the tank put the tank at risk.Purple up has been known to cause ph fluctuations in just about every tank it is used in.Dancing around with your ph is a dangerous dance at best, dont do it, you wont like the music and I am sure your fish wont either.Every time you do something to hurry the tanks natural process's you put your tank and its inhabitance at risk. NOTHING GOOD EVER HAPPENS IN A HURRY IN A REEF TANK.

First off, if you would have to add buffer everyday you would have a serious problem somewhere that needed to be addressed.
With regular water changes your coralline should grow nicely. Rome wasn't built in a day & your coralline won't grow to cover your rock in a week. If you have areas or rocks with no growth, simply scratch some of the coralline you already have. That will send the spores throughout the tank & soon you'll have it all over.
A lfs will sell you anything & everything you don't need because they know that you'll be back shortly replacing everything they just helped you wipe out.
Using Purple Up to help the coralline algae & then adding something to counter the pH lowering effects just doesn't make sense. You're making a chemical soup for your tank inhabitants.

Okay, this was the answer I expected to see and one I have learned is what the reef world goes by. I've had patience thus far and with the amount of money that I've spent in the past 5-6 weeks patience is a must. Thanks again guys, I will not use the purple up...I'll just wait for the natural cycle to take place and get more growth, my rocks are already about 75% covered with the exception of one...

Also, I've been keeping my calcium levels between 450-500 and growth seems good. Is this too high?

IMHO your calcium level is testing at 450 to 500, this is a little high, however it is probably also useless, without knowing your alc and mag levels your adding something to your tank in a manner that is most likely out of balance, "if" your alc/calk/mag were in correct balanced levels you would NOT be asking about poopleup, you would be asking"how do I get this $37^$2&* purple crap off my glass, here is a link for basic water chemistry, spend your money on a couple of test kits and then at least you will know where your at and what to add.Reef Aquarium Water Parameters by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com

I'm glad you feel as if your the king of the world the way you posted your message but I'm just feeling sorry for you, the guy posting on the forums on a Friday night all alone with no friend...Oh, and if you talked to your friends like you posted on here, no wonder your all alone on a Friday night??

Does anyone else have an intelligent response other than steevo??? I can't quite trust a response of someone that's so demeaning on just a simple question. My test kit does say that 400-500 is the range for calcium so I thought this was acceptable, I guess I don't know all the answers like scuba steve over there but that is why I'm here asking questions so I can LEARN!

Default Re: Purple Up???

calcium for a reef tank should be right around 400-450.

but if its ay 500 is everyhting gonna die? no.

if its at 300 will all the softies die? no

but things will do much better when calcium is at 400-450

Dustin and Steve,

CHILL OUT PLEASE..

These forums are not the place for bickering...

Everyone has a different opinion and we should try to respect that.

Do NOT dose what you are NOT testing for, This is a hobby that pays off with time, if you wanna rush things, expect the worst.

Also please use the "search" feature, you'll find a ton of questions about "purple up" already with the same general answer "Stay away from it" and use a standard 2 part such as B-Ionic or Kent Tech CB

Hey! That's what we're all here for - to share experiences and information.

The only stupid question is the one not asked.
