I have a prizm protein skimmer and I agree with you, it is not that great. If you adjust the knob on the intake to allow more water flow, you will get much more foam production. You will also get a lot of tiny bubbles in your tank, which no one wants. The instructions say to allow as much flow as possible without having too many bubbles flow into the tank. I believe when the knob is parallel to the intake, that is max flow. When you have the knob turned to be perpendicular with the intake this creats minimal flow. For me, to keep the bubbles out of the tank, I have it set on almost the minimal flow. Thus, the skimmer is less effective. The other thing I do not like is that prizm skimmers are very noisy.

Hi I use the prism skimmer and found it very noisey to start with i find if you hsce the adjustment valve around 3.45pm position it is just right at collecting dry foam with the fine bubbles i put a small amount of filter wool packed tight about half full in the black basket thingy:rolleyes:

Default skimmer not bad

I have one and it is noisy but it does remove protien this skimmer and liverock are the only filtration that I use on a 60 gal and water params are good. I dont like having to mess with the adjuster all the time but for the money I cant complain.

i have one also. if you want a couple "mods" to it here they are.
1. extend the neck of the skimmer cup. to do this put two zip ties around the skimmer neck one top of each other. this allows you to put the skimmer cup on higher and utilize more flow through the skimmer and skim better.
2. if you have the surface skimmer use it! i got 50% more skim and a crystal clear surface.
3. adjust water to 10/4 as if it were a clock, or until bubbles are a 1/2" below the bottom line on the neck without neck mod. with neck mod 1/2" above.
4. larger airline will allow more air in to the skimmer. you can also use an air valve instead of hooking it up to the cup to reduce noise.
5. to reduce airbubles put a carbon pad in the last chamber. this eliminated them for me and allowed back pressure on the skimmer.

i will try to post pics later. need to get to class
