Default Diatom filter or UV sterilizer?

I have a 55 gallon reef tank and my fish are having minor problems with parasites. Small white spots keep showing up, but the next day my cleaner shrimp takes care of it ( it seems). I havn't been hospitalizing them in my qt tank because the shrimp seems to be taking car of it. To further prevent this problem and try and get the parasites out off the water i want to know what people suggest. I've been reading about diatom filtters and it seems like a good solution but i don't really understand them ( the charging and everything) or should i just purchase a uv sterilizer. Any suggestions?

Default Re: Diatom filter or UV sterilizer?

Well in my opinion and I'm one sided on this subject but I would go with the UV Sterilizer. Only do this though if your tank is established b/c UV's don't know the difference between good and bad bacteria...they kill everything. So like everything else in this hobby it has it's pro's and con's. To me however the pro's outweigh the con's, at least in my estimation. I know Cadlights sells UV sterilizers and I think foster and smith might sell them too. Hope this helps.
