Default R/O quality

Got a four stage R/O unit that I have had for about 3 weeks and I’m not getting as pure water as I would like. My TDS meter is reading 7ppm, I know you want it to be as close to 0 as possible so is 7ppm high?? My source is piped w/ a “y” split off my washer. Is it possible that it’s not getting enough pressure because it’s sharing a water supply?

Some people will say 1 is to high. I have read up to 10 is ok. I guess you'll have to use your best judgement. Try checking saltwater.about.com

There seems to be two things that make r/o units work at less than peak effiency. Pressure below 60 psi and cold water.Remember chemical reactions are more efficient at higher temps. Not to hot though, around 75 should do it.

There seems to be a problem determining that fact here in Richmond.I have had mine tested 3 times with three widly varying answers from 145 to 300+.So either the water quality is inconsistant or the meter at the lfs is(or both).

I was under the impression that tap water can vary from day to day. If I was getting RO water of 7 ppm, I would change the filter. That is just me, though.

You could try adding hot water to it. Or you can have your water system plumbed with a tepid water system. It automatically mixes hot & cold water.

It could also be that the filters that came with your RO/DI unit were not the best. At Glampka's suggestion, I got mine from Air, Water, Ice and it's a 5 stage. Our tap water was 225+ ppm before the RO/DI, and with the RO/DI unit, it's at 0. We run it from our cold water line as well, so it would seem that the filter quality makes a big difference, as does the # of stages.

is it possible that i could put a ball valve like i have on the cold water line and just control the water temp coming out of the hot water line or is there a better solution?

Not sure this would work, it's early, coffee hasn't kicked in yet and I'm getting a cold, with those disclaimers stated: what about a "reverse" y setup. I have my RO/DI on my washer also so I can picture your setup. I would try this - Y the hotwater hose also, one going to the washer one for the RO/DI, then take the hoses from the hot water and the cold water and attach to another Y - the RO/DI unit can now be attached to the hot/cold Y. Not sure how the temp control would be, (or if it would even work at all) (there would be Y's - one on cold, one on hot, and one which combines both)...
You try it first and if it works let me know

I was under the impression that temperature only affected the amount of product water and not quality. Also I have always rejected the first gallon are so;but having recently installed an Inline tds It gives a reading of 0 from get go. So now I'm not sure If this is necessary.

Typically, it's only the first gallon or two after a new filter or unit install - but not the first gallon everyday. Again, unless you have old filters or infrequent use and the filters are disintegrating.
