Uv sterilizers are indiscriminate killers. They kill everything that goes thru them.If you have to have one get it,set it up,and dont use it till you have some sort of uncontrollable outbreak.OR,for 5 times the money you could get an ozonizer. And it will do two really cool things for you.It kills only patogens, and by adding ions to protiens it makes your skimmer hyper efficient and thereby your water super clear. However some caution is advised as you can easily over do it,and the use of carbon filtration is required.

What Nativevaman says is right but there is your options. UV or Ozone. UV kills beneficial bacteria for sure and some people feel the good they provide out weighs the bad. Ozone works great and gives you crystal clear water. If you have a malfunction with your equipment or even something as simple as a dirty probe you run the risk of killing everything in your tank.

150 gal I say Aqua UV sterilizer w/wiper 40 or 57 watts
