| See? A literary background! Sounds like you had a good following. My problem is that I used to write ad copy fro Madison Ave ad agencies when I was younger. It used to be that less is more, but I got that upside down when I changed coasts.... Last edited by Mattfish; 12-01-2007 at 01:10 PM. |

| Well, not that it matters to anyone but I am running a 57 watt uv on my tank and now with my set up changed no pods run thru it. I guess I still lose beneficial bacteria but say what you want, my tank is clean, clear, growing, clams, SPS and I fight no sickness or desease. Doesnt seem to be the norm from what I hear on these boards. Once past those first 2-3 mos with everything going thru QT everything been fine. Why is UV getting such a bad rap? I run carbon and phosphate reactors with respective media 24/7 also. |

| I would not say its getting a bad rap.I think it is getting the cautionary note that it deserves.If you read the ads for uv they are the cure all for every reef tank under the sun.The evidence would indicate that that is not the case.Yes they kill ich,during only 1/3 of its life span.Does it kill pods,of course it does,and good bacteria with the bad.I would say that with the judicious use of quarintine measures they become much less useful.Even though they cost 5 times as much I would go ozone ispite of the scare tactics that abound regarding its use. |

I have a fuge with pods. With the right set up in the sump no water from the fuge needs to go thru the UV therefore pods live. Of course eventually all water is run thru the UV and beneficial and unbeneficial bacteria is killed. I have never looked at UV as a cure all. UV is just another line of defense against certain desease and algaes. Ozone...Still wrestling with this one. It works. Works super. At this point, to me, cost is irrelavent. It just doesnt matter anymore. With that being said, accidents can and do happen with ozone. When they do stuff dies. Usually all of it! Ozone is superior to UV but UV never crashed a tank with $1000s of livestock in it. We are dealing with things mechanical and mechanical things break down. I have to err on the side of caution here. UV vrs Ozone is strictly a matter of personal comfort level. |

| Ozone is just like any other piece of equipment in a tank.If it isnt cared for it fails.just like a uv bulb might be weak or burned out,or a skimmer cup may be full,or a pump might stop because its dirty. |

Dale I agree Ozone is great at at cleaning and polishing the water. For me, knowing mechanical things and my luck, Im just too scared to use it. Extra pump, doser, probe, dose thru the skimmer, running carbon after the skimmer is just a little scary for me. Maybe in time with some more hands on my feelings will change. | Ah, the inhumanity...... |
| ||||
| OK, I'm over it now. And back to your regular show.... |
| ||||
| you guys are nuts wouldn't the pods going through your pump kill them anyways! thats what i thought and the UV sterilizer on your return line would just pass them through it so they would already be dead mind you im not using a sump/refugium but i run my coralife 6x18watt Uv sterilizer 24/7 and i barely ever have to clean the glass before i had to clean it daily cause of my 750w metal halide would caue the algae to grow like crazy but ever since i put the UV sterilizer on there my tank looks very clean and before putting fish in your show tank you should ALWAYS QT them first thats what i do cause if you got a big tank with coral everywhere it can be REAL HARD to cathc a sick fish!

| But heres a question if you do end up with ick on your fish can a cleaner shrimp cure them by picking the ick off there bodys has anyone ever seen this?

| A return pump may kill a few of them but not even close to all.The idea is to maintain a living breading population.This will never happen with a uv sterilizer.Ich wont get in your tank if you dont let it.Using a QT for a week wont do it. |
| ||||
| i duuno i use a UV sterilizer 24/7 and the pods are still breeding like wild fire mind i add microvert daily which i believe keeps then going and i usually do hyposalinity treatment to my fish before i put them in my tank just to be sure they don;t get sick in my tank and i have never had a problem
