Default tunze? or ecotech?

can anyone tell me wich of these two impellar pumps would be better? As far as heat output and quality.

I am about to upgrade my circulation and these are the two options I have come to.

I like the fact that I can add a wave box to the tuze.

I like the fact that ecotech is magnetic (leaving the moter outside the tank)
and the fact that the multi-controler is wire-less.

Yeah, tough decission. I'm going to settle it with reliability and the ability to get service if repairs are needed.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lucky

I can only give info on the EcoTech - have them, think they're great. No heat in the tank, very quiet, lots of flow. It creates an undertow and surface movement. Mine are positioned about in the middle of the tank (depth wise, 24" deep) and it pulls water from the bottom and top - creates little whirlpools on the surface now and then. I have 2 and get plenty of flow for my 240. That's my 2 cents!!

I have 2 of the tunze pumps. I like that they can be aimed and have a small footprint, and move alot of water. I hate the cheap, junk, piece of crap brackets that they used. JUNK, JUNK, JUNK. I won't buy anymore of the nano-streams, that is for sure.

Jay,
Thanks for your honesty. As expensive as this hobby can be I want to get it right.
This feed back is very good. I was not sure if that "ugly" bracket for the tunze was
worth the purchase or not. My tank is right out in the middle of the living room and is open
on three sides so look is second in my favor (inhabitants living conditions come first)
cost is an isue but between the two they are very close in money.
I also found out that I can still use the tunze wave-box if I go with ecotech pumps.
So again thanks for your thoughts.
Happy fish'n
Lucky

I would say it depends on how many gph your returns are and what you want in your tank. Each EcoTech can move 300 - 3000 gph. I have a total of 8000 gph on my tank which is 33x. If you want 30x flow you will need about 9000 gph, or 3 EcoTechs if you have no other flow. Your returns should be 2000 - 3000 gph...
I'm not sure about the wireless controller, I dont have one, probably wont get one until I have various corals.
I've had mine several months, and no problems at all. They need a few days to break in, a little noisy at first but now very quiet.

I like Marinedepot.com, good prices and quick shipping. If you get lost in their website you can call the number and they are very helpful

What part of Ohio are you in? If your Cleveland area Salty Critter carrys them.
Both Salty and Drs Foster and Smith have them mail order for same price.

VorTech pump by EcoTech Marine distributed thru IceCap
Reef Aquarium Water Pumps & Powerheads: VorTech Propeller Pumps MP40 & MP40W

Edit-- just checked out marine depot, same price as salty and drf&s, vortech must be mandating price.

Last minute thought - our new setup has a SeaSwirl as the main return pump/wavemaker. The old tank (same size - 125g) had the dual overflow, split into 2 each returns (static), and 4 Hydor Koralia 1's.

The new tank has 1 pump midway down buried in rock with just a slit opening, and the SeaSwirl at the farther end. It's driven by a smaller Rio return pump than we had in the old system, and we get MUCH, MUCH better flow and water exchange. In effect, we've got less electrical stuff in the tank, greater flow and waves, and less power usage, etc. For us, a great way to go, and because the SeaSwirl is sitting only about 1-2 inches under the water, plenty of surface movement as well for outgassing, and flicker from the lights.

I'm tellin ya - check this out before you go with in-tank stuff that'll probably cost a lot more.

Sea Swirl

That seaswirl would probably work great if you had a closed loop, but I didn't think you wanted/needed that much flow through the sump?

We don't have a closed loop - there's a sump/fuge and the return pump sits at the end of the chain of course, and sends the return back through the SeaSwirl. I'll find out the exact size of the return pump today, but it's designed by guys that have been doing this for years to give the right return rate. Also, I noticed they have several sizes on their website.
