As for sand bed I Like a DSB and made my sand 6" but any thing 4" or over would work for a DBS. As for baffles You want to make sure you have them down from the top enough to allow for a power outage and the amount of water from your tank. You did not say how big your tank is so I can't even guess. another thing you might consider is the amount of water your skimmer needs to set in.

My tank is a 55 gal. I think I'll be using an ASM G3.( Thank you santa! ) How deep should the G3 sit? I'm gessing that how deep the overflow sits, will determine height of the baffles. Is this correct? I want to build the overflow like the one from Melesreef. Does this style of overflow work well?
Thanks!
