Well I'm going to show you the same post that I just read on another web site (reef builders New england) I was asking questions about UV Sterilzers just tonight and the Owner/Admin of that site told me this

"Dont get hung up on the UV Sterilizer they are overrated IMO. If the flow is too fast they're inefective, if the flow is too slow they're ineffective. Bulb life is short, and once the bulb begins to weaken they're ineffective. In order for it to work the target needs to pass through it. They're indiscriminate killers and when working properly will kill everything that passes through good or bad."

So now I'm re-thinking the whole UV thing. If you have algae (other than free-floating particles in your water) then you probably have an underlying issue. If your worried about Ich I suggest a QT tank...you only need about a 10 gallon tank, a HOB filter, chepo light and some PVC for the fish to hide in...they're multiple threads on here about QT looks any of those up. As far as the algae maybe if you gave us your water parameters we could help you out. I'm not saying UV sterilzers are worthless or anything but I think what they can do you can accomplish with a little work.

yeah i have a Qtank. the problem is catchin the fish that has it and putting it into the tank. i've tried feeding him garlic xtreme but that doesnt seem to help. thats why i was looking into a uv sterilizer as a last resort, while doing the garlic xtreme.

Great! I believe I have ich in my freshwater tank! First time for everything I guess. It's only on ONE fish about five little dots...that's it. But I believe it's it!
