Default SG/ppt question

can someone with a refractometer please tell me the SG or ppt of distilled white vinegar?

My 2 hydrometers say:
1.075
1.010

I want to see which one is more accurate. I hope the 1.075 is because I have been basing all my tanks SG off of that one.

Ok,
I have two differ ones,
I got these two readings..

1.009
1.010

So I think that shows that the one that is 1.010 is more accurate.
My two are like this one though... http://www.petsolutions.com/images/a...level-rock.jpg Not a refractometer (i don't think) but that is what I use for my SG.... Sorry if I didn't help!

That is a hydrometer, same one I have. They are known to not be perfectly accurate. refractometers are much more accurate and I hope to get one for my birthday, but until then I want to see how accurate my hydrometer really is.

I will try to remember to check tonight for you. According to Heinz, distilled white vinegar has a SG of 1.01, although when rounding 1.005 to 1.014 both round back to 1.01. I wouldn't doubt that each brand or batch of vinegar has different readings.

BTW - From what I have seen, most often hydrometers read on the low side, so my guess would be that the 1.01 reading is more accurate.

hmmm....alrighty, thanks! So if my 55g reads a SG of 1.026, you think it is really around 1.028-1.030?

I forgot to test the vinegar last night. It's always tough to tell when your using a hydrometer what the actual reading is. Thankfully, corals and fish can adjust to the salinity. I have 2 hydrometers. One is off by 0.001 and one is off by 0.005 so when it reads 1.025, the actual salinity is at 1.030. Before I got my refractometer, my tank was probably at 1.030 for over a year and everything did good, so your tank could very well be in the 1.028-1.030 range without seeing any/minimal side effects.

Yeah, in the red sea the salinity can get as high as 1.035, so I am not too conserned about 28-30.

I forgot to post the vinegar SG that I got when I tested. The generic white vinegar that I've been using has a SG reading of 1.012 If I think about it tonight, I can also test a bottle of Heinz and see what that reads.

I just realized the one hydrometer reading should be 1.0075.
