Icon14 sump/fuge setup problem

Recently I upgraded my 29 gallon tank to a 55 gallon tank and want to set up a 10 gallon sump/fuge underneath the main tank. Anyway I bought 2 marineland 300gph pumps. I one pump was to pump water to the skimmer in the sump/fuge. The other pump was to return the water to the main tank. Needless to say I found out qucikly that this did not work out so well. My sump/fuge quickly overflowed and only worsened as I pulled to plug. Anyway I am guessing that my return pump needs to be much stronger. Any suggestions to improve the system?
Additionally after this fiasco I noticed that both my 300gph pumps (one which I had been running on my precision marine skimmer on my 29 gallon tank) were signifciantly weaker. Both pumps are relatively new could they have been damaged in this process?

Are you talking about Marineland Penguin Powerhead PH1140, If so a powerhead is not going to work. You need a pump with enough Head to push the water back up to the tank.
try this link to see which pump will work for you. it is a Head Loss Calculator .
