Default noisy filter thingee

so the small box on the side of the actual filter is making some weird noise....kinda like a grinding.......i was told it could possibly be an impeller problem.......i was told that to try cleaning it out or repairing it but i have no clue how to do either one!! ya i know im kinda lacking in the saltwater smarts department but any help would be appreciated

A little more info would help Like what kind of filter is it. If it is a HOB unplug it and take it off take it to your sink, bath tub some water source. Then remove the pick up tube most models will a cover under the pick up tube remove it and the impeller will be in sight. Gust pick striate up and wash well and wipe and rinse the housing it was in then replace every thing then re-prime it and plug back in. You may need to hold the pickup tube down while priming. If not a HOB tell us what it is and some one will be able to help you.

I'm not familiar with the one you have but filters can make one heck of a noise if they don't have a good prime. Is there a filler tube on the one you have? If so you might try holding it down while poring tank water in to the filter. I can shut up my HOB filters that way. It sounds like it is trying to grind gravel when it is bad,( enough to make me nuts.)
