I keep mine in the sump only because I have to fit everything under my cabinet. Also, if there is ever a leak it will leak into the sump and not on my floor.

I am going to run 1/2" PVC from the RIO 600 right into the skimmer intake and then set it outside the tank. That was one of the few ways that i could make the fuge on the other side bigger, and i dont think it will change anything. If it does then i will get a bigger Rio pump, they are really cheap as water pumps go. I will probably cut a 5 gallon bucket in half so that if it starts to leak or something like that i can catch the water in time. I dont really know yet, havent thought that part out..lol

It depends on the brand of skimmer. There are ones designed for outside, inside or both. With an inside skimmer, you do have to watch the water level both above the pump and in the mixing chamber of the skimmer. In Sump skimmers may have a minimum/maximum sump water level. I have the ATI Bubblemaster 160, it is sensitive to the sump and skimmer water levels (an in sump only skimmer). You have to keep the level about 6-8" to get the best skimming.

Some people keep it in the sump due to space available.

Other will not keep it outside the sump because of the plumbing involved.

Only a personal preference.
