I was reading that you should take the glass covers off your fish tank because of the water droplets it creates makes the light lose intensity. Is this true?

Thanks

Newbie looking for advice

Hey! I just joined this site for i could look for tips and advice for my new aquarium. I got a 65 gallon red sea max. It it is doing fie except the protein skim. broke but i will be getting a new one from Red Sea in about a week. I am hoping to do a reef but i am still debating weather i should. I really like lionfish and losts of other non-reef safe fish:crybaby: But i got really good lights that will handle corals and i would not like to waste them. And also i really like clowns and i like both clarkies(?) and perculas, so I know im not supposed to keep both kinds together but is it possible to? Also how do i feed corals? And would you reccomend
ordering fish online or getting them at my fish store? And any other advice would be nice. Thanks in advance!

I have a nano reef -29 gallon that has been running since March 2009 the water, live rock and live sand came from a seahorse tank that was established for 2 years. In April i introduced a frag of Acanthastrea. it survived and slowly grew from 3 to 7 polyps. several months ago i started feeding it Omega one marine pellets with garlic. 2-3 of the polyps would take a small pellet each. I fed it only 1-2 times per week. about two months ago it doubled in size. the polyps are all 3x their original size and i can now count 13 polyps some as large as a quarter. last week the mouths all disappeared. the oral disk is a solid purplish black the same shade as the rest of the polyp that is mixed between the bright green areas.

Is this a problem??????

Ricordea, Xenia, Pachyclavularia, Zooznthids all doing great!

So i have been keeping FW tanks for about 10 years and i want to try SW. A friend is giving me a 55 gallon tank and i want to get it drilled for a sump. I want to build the sup myself and i was wondering could i made it out of a 10 gallon tank? Would this be big enough for the 55 gallon?

So i bought my chiller for my 95 gal tank and am excited to get it hopefully this week. So now my question is this. Can i install it from the return pump to the chiller to the tank? I have a mag 9.5 that is used to return to the tank and have a ball valve between it. Will this work? Is this a good setup for the chiller return?

Thanks

Ocean Gallery 15th Anniversary Gala

This Saturday and Sunday we are celebrating 15 years in this location. A lot has happened in the world over the last 15 years but Ocean Gallery continues to provide you a great diversity of healthy fish and corals. We've thought about some different and interesting ways to promote this important time in Ocean Gallery's history but decided that with the state of the economy the best way to serve you is to offer you some outlandish pricing on some awesome livestock. All livestock will be 30% off the normal price.

Here are some examples of what the pricing will be:

Flame Angels 44.80
ORA ocellaris clowns $14
ORA Canary Blennies $19
Turbo Snails 1.00
Blue Leg Hermits 1.00
Sm Hippo Tangs $29
ORA Aquacultured frags as low as $35
Our own SPS frags as low as $10
Our famous Acan frags $21
Dendrophyllia $35/polyp
Chalice frags as low as $35
Trachyphyllia as low as $40
Torch Corals as low as $45
Deresa Clams $25
Maxima Clams starting at $42

And this is just a sample of the pricing this weekend...Remember all livestock will be 30% off. We promised that this would be a weekend that you wouldn't want to miss and we WILL keep our promise.

Of course with any celebration comes food. Coffee and donuts in the morning and pizza in the afternoon.

The first 10 people that come in on Saturday will also be able to purchase a bucket of Brightwell Salt for $50 or a royal gramma for $9.

And to top it all off..........For every $20 you spend you'll get a raffle ticket for our drawing on Saturday and Sunday

Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer in a 34g Solana? Doable?

I have read online that some have installed a Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer into the back of a Solana. I was thinking of upgrading my 22g Nano to a Solana. But I also wanted to upgrade the Skimmer to the Tunze if this was really possible. I read that "and with a slight modification it fit and worked great"

If anyone has done this or has experience on this modification, I would like to know. Also does it fit entirely into the Solana's back and does not stick out. This tank would be for my bedroom and I want it to look nice as well but feel that the upgraded skimmer will be quite beneficial.

Any pics would be greatly appreciated as well.

And as a side question, how quiet is the Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer? Being in my bed room where I do sleep, half the reason for switching from my current 22g cube set up with a hang on CPR is the noise.

Breeding Pair of Onyx for sale

I have a spawning pair of Onyx for sale. These are the real deal, will produce Onyx. The female is gorgeous, the only fish I have seen in person that has a jet black tail. I have had the pair for about 4 months now and they have spawned several time for me. The male is NOT the male she came with, he is one I paired her with as the original male was not black enough for my tastes.

I now have more spawning Onyx pairs then I need so I have decided to sell only one pair for the moment. They are perfectly good spawners, females age is unknown, however she is less than 5 years old.

Anyway, I am asking $1200 for the pair. I feel this is a very reasonable price for a breeding pair of Onyx. An experienced breeder and/or anyone with a customer base will be able to recover the money from this purchase within one batch.

Here is a video of the pair.

Feel free to call me at 707-718-7110, if I do not answer I am most likely in class, just leave a voicemail and I will call you back. Email, cafricard@yahoo.com, I try to check daily but it doesn't always happen, so phone is best way to reach me.

New to saltwater

I want to set up a saltwater tank. I have kept a freshwater for 10 years and grew plants and kept all kinds of different fish. I think im ready for salt water now. Just want to know if this would work. The tank is a 55 gallon. I want to get 100 pounds of live rock and a protein skimmer. I have a HOB filter that is made for a 100 gallon tank. Could i just take out the filter pads and add bio balls? I have 2 power heads i can put inside. I would like to grow some coral and i want to have seahorses and some hardy fish to start with. My lighting is 130 watts coral life. I think i have to get new bulbs for it to suit the coral. Am i heading in the right direction? What exactly does the protein skimmer do any ways?

Thanks,
Justin

Hi
I have been keeping a marine tank for quite a few years now, but I am about to upgrade from a 48" tank to a 6ft 6" x 2ft x 2ft tank.
As part of the upgrade I am switching from fluorescents to metal halides. Is it better to have one or two high power metal halides or are a larger number of lower power units better?
I would think that you would get better light distribution with more units and could maybe phase the start up so as not to shock the coral or fish so much but is there any other advantages/ disadvantages.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We have a 55 gallon tank that we have been cycling and preparing with live rock and sand for several weeks.

A couple of days ago, we added 2 false clowns and a cleaner shrimp that we drip acclimated prior to adding them. They found their "home" almost immediately and have not really moved from that area but have been fairly active.

This morning, we noticed one of them is not being active. He almost seems to be stuck on the sand bed. He just kinda sits there and is either "laying" on sand bed or pressed up against the glass.

His color isn't faded at all and his appearance hasn't changed at all. The best I can describe it, is he seems stuck. We target fed them this morning in case the issue was food, the other one ate right away and as far as I can tell, this one has not eaten yet.

Is this normal? Should we be concerned?

I need to know how to control the tank water level. I have a 120 gal with two overflows. Each overflow has a 1.5 inch pipe or tube where the water drops down to the sump. Each pipe or tube, is a tube within a tube, and the length of the tube can be changed by moving the outer tube up or down. I remember something about adjusting the height of the tubes up or down but when I do the level in the tank does not change.

Can someone explain how to get the water level down? :confused1:

Hello-just wanted to stop in and say hi ! I have been a member for a while , more of a lurker than a typer though. I have been in the hobbie for a couple of years now. I have a 75 gallon reef in progress that has been up and running for about year now after the unfortunate disaster that struck my 24 gal nano tank. Yup just sitting around the house one weekend and all the sudden there was this loud crack and water started gushing all over the place. Made a mad dash to local fishstore to get the new tank ! What an experience that was, thank god it happened on the weekend when we were home-cant imagine what that would have been like walking in from a long day at work lol !!:o Looking forward to posting future threads and comments. May need help in the future so this looks to be a good place to go !

New Reef Style

Greetings,

I wanted to pass some information on about my experience in reef keeping. I am somewhat new with less than a year in the hobby. I read thru the Internet until I reached the end, and I harassed every LFS. :)

I have 125g main tank with a 90g refugium. I have about 600-700gph circulation thru the system (1000+gph pump). 2 1200gph circulating pumps(hydor)
Water Quality is:
No Ammonia
No Nitrate
No Nitrite
Salinity 1.024
Temp avg 78-82 deg
Ph 8.1-8.3
Calcium ~400
(I let my LFS's test my water too)

I have done ONE water change since the tank was birthed. ~30gallons (tap water) - I use Instant Ocean Salt (not reef crsytals)

I run no Activated Carbon (only once for 15days after water change), No protein Skimmer, no Mechanical Filtration, etc.

*Main:*
Fish in Tank:
Yellow Tang
Yellow-eye Tang
Dragon Goby
Lawnmower Blenny
Perc. CLown Fish
Maderian Goby (in refug)
Inverts:
Sandsifting starfish
5 Peppermint shrimp
10 Snails (mixed)
20 hermits (red, blue, scarlet, etc)
4 Emerald crabs

*Refugium:*
2 emerald crabs
4 peppermint shrimp
20 hermit crabs (mixed)
5 snails
invasion of Copepods/Amphipods
Mysis Shrimp
bristle worms
lots of Detritivores

Now, I test my water once a week. Add Aragamilk with every gallon of drinking water I add. overfeed the refugium and feed main tank once per day (1 block of frozen mysis shrimp and teaspoon of dried fish pellets) 2 cap-fulls DT phyto every2-3days, Seachem Fuel every wk

The Refugium is swarming with Feather-dusters (100s) and the Macro-Algae is blooming!

6-8" of fine oolite sand (DSB) in main tank and refugium.

100-150lbs of live rock.

*Corals:* (mostly simple)
Sun Coral ~4months
Torch Coral ~1 month
Zena ~7 months
Pink-Lighting ~2 months
Star-polyps ~7 months
Button Polyps ~1-6 months
Leathers ~1 month

All corals love tank save the Zenia.

*Lighting:*
Main
2x 72" 160w T12 VHO (Actinic white & 454 blue)
2x 36" Nova Extreme fixtures (2x 39w T5 HO 10000K & actinic blue)
1 72" 54 LED 470nm blue

Refugium
1 36" 39w T5 6500K (life-glo)
1 36" 39w T5 18000K (power-Glo)

How can this tank function? Goes directly against mostly everything I have read and 2 marine biologists (friends).
*Will my tank crash?* (seems like it gets better every week)

Advice and discussion wanted:thumbup:

Bubble tip anemone split

A few days ago I had 1 large bubble tip. While feeding my fish I fed it some frozen mysis...my hipo tang went in to try and steal it's food, it was almost like watching someone get punched in the face...the hippo got stung and was swimming around dizzy with his mouth open for like 5 minutes..he's OK now. The next day my anemone split, not sure if it had anything to do with the hippo getting stung. then the next day it split again so I now have 3..they look healthy, see attached pic.

About a month ago I set up a 30g tank for some sea horses. Live rock and live sand, very basic. This afternoon I noticed some small translucent organisms attached to the side of the glass. About the sized of the tip of a pin with small tentacles. There are others swimming/floating around. The shape reminds me of a tiny bad mitten birdy. Oddly enough when i turned the light off hundreds of them seem to swim up from the sand. Sorry for no pics at the moment..Still looking for camera.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone ?

Our manufacturer droped a nice little surprise on use with our last batch of PAR38 lamps: MOAR POWER!! They have gone from about 15W to about 21W of power draw. What this means is about a 25% increase in PAR output with the same lens configuration. All lamps shipping now will be the higher power version.

new to saltwater

I have had freshwater aquariums for over 10 years.
I was dying to try saltwater and eventually move up into corals.

I have a 55 gallon with 50 pounds of live rock
4-6 inch DSB
30 gallon tank as a sump with skimmer and
trying to start up a refugium maybe with mangrove
right now I have a small bunch of macroalgae

fr critters I only have a small clean up crew.

I have figured out the 3 fish I want as a goal
Clownfish
(part of the deal with my 4 kids)
mandarin goby
flame angel

I want corals eventually but would like the system up and running for months with no probs first.

We are selling (2) Elos eLites (http://coralmorphologic.com/xcart/product.php?productid=3190&cat=19) that came with our Elos Mini aquariums. They have never been used, although we have taken them out of the box and turned them on to check them out and make sure they are working. They are the black version and they are VERY BRIGHT. Stunning on a trimless aquarium. Check out the articles on these lights at ReefBuilders...
Elos system mini, E-lite pictures abound | Reef Builders -The Reef Aquarium Blog (http://www.reefbuilders.com/2008/08/29/elos-system-mini-e-lite-pictures-abound/)
Elos e-lite LED PAR numbers come out | Reef Builders -The Reef Aquarium Blog (http://www.reefbuilders.com/2008/09/27/elos-e-lite-led-par-numbers-come-out/)

See picture of the one we're selling below... PM me if you want more pics.

The cheapest we could find them for on the internet was $750, so this a rare deal. Once these two are sold, we won't be selling anymore. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. We are selling them because we have built our own custom lighting system for the Elos Minis and simply don't need them. Click Here to Buy...

We are selling (2) Elos eLites that came with our Elos Mini aquariums. They have never been used, although we have taken them out of the box and turned them on to check them out and make sure they are working. They are the black version and they are VERY BRIGHT. Stunning on a trimless aquarium. Check out the articles on these lights at ReefBuilders...

I live in Arizona and it gets hot. MY 90 gal tank with a 20 gal fuge would range up to 86, so i plan on getting a chiller for next year. I would like the temp to be 78. What is a good hp to get for a chiller?
1/2, 1/3, ...1/10. I would like it to be a bit overpowered so it doesnt stay on long just to cool off. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello everyone, something unusual (for my tank anyway) happened this morning. My wife and I went out for breakfast (that's not unusual) and before we left the tanks actinic were on and everything was fine. When we got home about 1 1/2 hours later, the tank is really clouded up (milky white) and the skimmer is foaming excessively. The skimmer is not filling up with spent water like an over reaction it foaming with large foam reminding one of soap bubbles. Alk = 10 dkh, Calc = 460 ppm. Checked for Ammonia and it is 0 ppm. I'm puzzled. Did nothing with the tank in the way of additives or water change. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Any advice on using this device. I have read online that it tends to gum up. Is this a common problem? Would usng water from the sump reduce the occurence of such a problem? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Cleaner Shrimp and ich

Hello.

Last weekend I purchased a black & white angel for my 55 FOWLR. Just this morning, I have noticed that he has several white specks on his fins and a few on his body. I have dealt with ich before, unfortunately, and REALLY don't want to have to treat the tank. Has anyone had luck with cleaner shrimp in this situation or heard of anyone who has? I have been wanting to get one for a while and this could be a good time if I got him today. Thank you for any help.
