New Reef Style

Greetings,

I wanted to pass some information on about my experience in reef keeping. I am somewhat new with less than a year in the hobby. I read thru the Internet until I reached the end, and I harassed every LFS. :)

I have 125g main tank with a 90g refugium. I have about 600-700gph circulation thru the system (1000+gph pump). 2 1200gph circulating pumps(hydor)
Water Quality is:
No Ammonia
No Nitrate
No Nitrite
Salinity 1.024
Temp avg 78-82 deg
Ph 8.1-8.3
Calcium ~400
(I let my LFS's test my water too)

I have done ONE water change since the tank was birthed. ~30gallons (tap water) - I use Instant Ocean Salt (not reef crsytals)

I run no Activated Carbon (only once for 15days after water change), No protein Skimmer, no Mechanical Filtration, etc.

*Main:*
Fish in Tank:
Yellow Tang
Yellow-eye Tang
Dragon Goby
Lawnmower Blenny
Perc. CLown Fish
Maderian Goby (in refug)
Inverts:
Sandsifting starfish
5 Peppermint shrimp
10 Snails (mixed)
20 hermits (red, blue, scarlet, etc)
4 Emerald crabs

*Refugium:*
2 emerald crabs
4 peppermint shrimp
20 hermit crabs (mixed)
5 snails
invasion of Copepods/Amphipods
Mysis Shrimp
bristle worms
lots of Detritivores

Now, I test my water once a week. Add Aragamilk with every gallon of drinking water I add. overfeed the refugium and feed main tank once per day (1 block of frozen mysis shrimp and teaspoon of dried fish pellets) 2 cap-fulls DT phyto every2-3days, Seachem Fuel every wk

The Refugium is swarming with Feather-dusters (100s) and the Macro-Algae is blooming!

6-8" of fine oolite sand (DSB) in main tank and refugium.

100-150lbs of live rock.

*Corals:* (mostly simple)
Sun Coral ~4months
Torch Coral ~1 month
Zena ~7 months
Pink-Lighting ~2 months
Star-polyps ~7 months
Button Polyps ~1-6 months
Leathers ~1 month

All corals love tank save the Zenia.

*Lighting:*
Main
2x 72" 160w T12 VHO (Actinic white & 454 blue)
2x 36" Nova Extreme fixtures (2x 39w T5 HO 10000K & actinic blue)
1 72" 54 LED 470nm blue

Refugium
1 36" 39w T5 6500K (life-glo)
1 36" 39w T5 18000K (power-Glo)

How can this tank function? Goes directly against mostly everything I have read and 2 marine biologists (friends).
*Will my tank crash?* (seems like it gets better every week)

Advice and discussion wanted:thumbup:

Bubble tip anemone split

A few days ago I had 1 large bubble tip. While feeding my fish I fed it some frozen mysis...my hipo tang went in to try and steal it's food, it was almost like watching someone get punched in the face...the hippo got stung and was swimming around dizzy with his mouth open for like 5 minutes..he's OK now. The next day my anemone split, not sure if it had anything to do with the hippo getting stung. then the next day it split again so I now have 3..they look healthy, see attached pic.

Hello everyone, something unusual (for my tank anyway) happened this morning. My wife and I went out for breakfast (that's not unusual) and before we left the tanks actinic were on and everything was fine. When we got home about 1 1/2 hours later, the tank is really clouded up (milky white) and the skimmer is foaming excessively. The skimmer is not filling up with spent water like an over reaction it foaming with large foam reminding one of soap bubbles. Alk = 10 dkh, Calc = 460 ppm. Checked for Ammonia and it is 0 ppm. I'm puzzled. Did nothing with the tank in the way of additives or water change. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Connecticut - Conference - April 25, 2010

Once again, CTARS will be holding a _Conference_ (http://www.conference.ctars.org) - the date is Sunday April 25, 2010. Again, it is at _ The Mohegan Sun Casino_ (http://mohegansun.com/gateway/index.html). Tickets are available on-line for $15 through December 31, 2009 and parking is FREE. As an added feature this year, you can buy your raffle tickets online as well.

We have a couple of new speakers scheduled to appear - Chris Clough and Vince Rado. Chris is an LED lighting expert and Vince is a Marine Biologist with 40 years of propagating history. Also speaking will be Sanjay Joshi.

We had a full room of vendors. Scheduled to be here are Reef Nutrition, Marco Rocks, Cherry Corals, Reef Koi Corals, Seachem and Wet Thumb Frags just to name a few.

We encourage you to get your tickets early and take advantage of the early bird pricing. They make great XMAS stocking stuffers (in case your significant other is wondering what to get you).

This is the largest gathering of reef keepers in the Northeast. We hope to see you here.
