Ive never about firefish being successfully bred, meaning larvae were captured and raised out to metamorphisis into juvenile fish.
I got lucky when I bought my 2 and got a compatable male/female pair and Im positive they have been breeding in my tank, but Ive never attempted to collect eggs/raise them out.

I dont know of any proven method to sex individuals. When she is gravid my female is fairly distinctive, belly is significantly distended (like after feeding) before food is presented, and when the pair is tending eggs I will only see one at a time out of the burrow.

In this thread http://www.reefbuilders.com/forums/f...-spawning.html the first picture is the pair, female is gravid and closer to camera. In the second picture the male is standing out front and the female is peeking from the burrow.

I would say its nearly impossible to tell gender until a female starts carrying eggs. I cant tell mine apart most of the time.
