Default baby ponies!

Well it has been two days since my BIG surprise in my seahorse tank...baby seahorses...lots of them! We didn't find them until the next morning so most of them were lost to older seahorses, and the filter system. We have saved 5 and they are doing well in their own little tank we just purchased today.

I thought the male was getting fat, but I had only had him less than two weeks. I looked it all up on the computer night before last and was shocked when I woke up to babies.

We are hoping at least one survives, but if not we are now ready for the next time it happens. So does anyone on the list have experience with breeding these little ponies??

From what I have read on seahorse.org you will need rotifers and or baby brine shrimp to feed them and small hitching post like a onion sack clipped to side of container. Some kind of mild filtration or very fine air stone go here and look.

It took me a day to get them in a new tank, fed, and the camera to focus on something so small. Here they are!

This is one of the little guys. They were born sometime Thursday night. My daughter is pointing to it in the tank so I can focus. They are about 1/8 of a inch long. We have 4 that have survived so far.

Here is a group shot of three of them. They are so much fun to watch swim.

And the final is a closeup shot of the 4th and also the biggest.

It is really amazing to see them go from the little clear blobs to little tiny seahorses. I am hoping that we can keep these 4 alive. Thanks for the help and ideas.

This is unbelievable! They are so small (or your finger is so big).

Good luck with 'em!

There is an article in Marine Fish & Reef Magazine Volume 9 about Home-Bred Seahorses. Just FYI in case you want to read something about seahorses.

I am sorry, I have been away from the list for awhile. The ponies did not make it. And very soon there after I lost 3 of the 4 adult ponies to something we have not been able to work out. The 4th is healthy and happy and getting bigger every day. We are leaving again so when we get back I will post some pics of her!

thanks for the interest! I will keep trying!
