Icon5 Fading Fish!

Hi,
Today is my first time using a saltwater forum, and the first time being on rb. I have a 55gal tank FOWLR. I have about 20lbs of rock, 2 false perc. clowns, Coral Beauty, Copper banded Buttery Fly, 3 stripe damsel, Yellow tang, a couple snails shrimp, and a Ch. Chip Star fish. All of my fish are doing great except for my Tang. He seems to be losing his color. I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. He is still swimming around and eattying like mad, as usual. He just seems to be fading, a pale looking yellow. The tank has been up for a good 2 and a half months, and he is one of the older fish, any advice will be great.
Thanks, Jason

Welcome Jason.
What are water parameters? Losing his color to me sounds like unhealthy or unhappy. What does he eat. Does anybody pick at him?
By the way, when those fish get bigger that will be a big bioload.

First off 8 fish in a 55 gallon may be a little too many. You may want to look at another tank soon. Just something small to transfer some of the fish in, plus you get another tank. Also, tangs need alot of algae in their diet so that may help you if you start feeding that. Does there look like there is little indents on his head and back because that may help us out here aswell.

My water is great. They only thing i can think of that has happened recently is my heater. It seemed to take a turn for the worse and my temp. has been changing quite a bit, but not more than 2 or 3 degress. Would that cause it? Also, he is NOT being picked on, he is doing more of the picking that anything. I was also looking for the indents that you mentioned and his body seems to be alright, just his color. I am feeding a small variety of Omega One Flakes, Pellets, A LOT of dried Seaweed, and Brine Shrimp. He eats like a cow and food doesn't seem be a problem. Also, I only have 6 six, i have (1) 3-stripe damsel, not 3 of them, which i plan on getting rid of sometime soon. I will try to take a picture, but how do i go about posting for you guys to see?
Thanks again,
Jason

My heater recently had stray voltage in water and killed a fish and his stomach looked pale.

So you think my heater may be the problem? If it is that should be a quick and easy fix. The only this is that all my other fish are doing GREAT! I have also read that i should get 2 smaller heaters instead of one big one. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks.

I am saying you might want to check for stray voltage.
I am sure you will get varying opinions on 1 or 2 heaters.

If you have a wacky heater, play it safe and get a new one. Also, are you soaking any of your food in a vitamin supplement? If not, I would suggest doing so.

I am not currently soaking any of my food. What should i use, i've heard garlic supplement, and other things. What kinds would you suggest? I need something that will be safe for all my fish, including my snails and shrimp. Also where would i get this stuff, i don't think my lfs has any supplements, only trace elements and such for reef aquariums.
Thanks

When soaking my food in vitamin supplements, will the bottle tell me how to dose, also do i soak the food or just add the supplements right to my tank? Sorry if these questions seem dumb but i would rather sound dumb than kill all my fish.
Thanks,
Jason

I am pretty sure you are supposed to soak the food in it. I dont see what good a bunch of garlic will do floating around your tank.

Vitamins added directly to the water will be leeched out quickly by your filtration system. Soak in the food, the food will retain it much longer. I soak my food in garlic, but only when quarantining.
