they can definatly harrass the other fish to death if not outright kill them, check on the compatibility of different fish...what kind of fish do you have or are planning to get???

Yes probably. Damsels are territorial and greedy ,they will harass the clown and it may stress out. I did not want to get rid of mine at first but after I did my tank seemed to do better. Remember a stressed fish can get sick too.

What if I re-arrange my rockwork and take out the damsels then putthe clown in. Then after a few hours put the damsels back in?

That might work as first, but once the damsels get used to the new environment, they will probably go back to their old habits.

dyan,
For compatability issues, please study first. It is safer to make sure you have all docile fish, but you still need to provide hiding areas and a large enough tank, so that territorial fish don't get too aggressive. I have a scopis tang and 2 clarki clowns who bully each other once in a while but can cope because of enough space.
In a smaller tank the clarki clowns chased everyone and denied every one else food, so the others got weaker, exhausted and starved to death. Be careful.

I have a 3 stripe damsel and a clown. They are almost the same size, and I got the damsel first. The damsel doesnt pick at the clown at all. Maybe I jsut got lucky.

I have a buddy with a 3 stripe damsel in a tank with 3 lionfish. The lionfish do not bother the damsel.

The three striped damsel, I'm guessing the humbug? It may be too big for the lionfish to eat.

I've had such bad experience with damsels, that I kinda wish the 3 lionfish would gang up on the damsel and at least give him a scare.

I have a yellow Tang and an Achiles Tang. I just put in a Blue hippo Tang and the Achiles Tang is chasing and hit on the Blue Tang. Will this stop sometime or am I having an incompatible pair of fish? Thanks in advance as I am a new to this hobby.

damsels are most often just a waist of time. they are aggressive and die easy. remember damsels don't like other damsels, especially if the others are already settled into the tank. So don't forget Clowns are a type of damsel.

If you REALLY want to do it. you can try taking the old damsels out of the tank. and putting them in a bucket for a couple hours while you aclimate the clown and change the rock work. (in order for the tank to look new for the old damsels when they are put back) this could stop how aggressive they act towards the clown at first.

Good Luck.

In reply to jatran's question. you do have a pair of fish that do not like each other. Most tangs do not like other tangs, its one of those rules just like only have 1 angel. but from what I have seen and have myself. they will get used to each other and stop fighting. I have a sail fin and a blue in my 55 together and they are best of friends... in a 125 there is plenty of space for them to find there own area.

Good luck to you also =)

this is the reason that damsels are so cheap, their not very nice. their kind of more for tanks that have large fish, they cant huras. you can keep some semi-aggressive fish with large peaceful fish. like im planning to have a 55g with an anemone, a snowflake moray eel and a pair of clownfish.
