Default Lionfish

So, I have a fuzzy dwarf lion, and a antennata lionfish. The fuzzy dwarf is about 3-4 inches long and the antennata is about 5-6. I feed them rosie reds, and they goble then right up. How often should I feed them? They always go after the food I give them, Ive been feeding them every other day or so. 1 fish each is whatthey get fed. the rosie reds are about 2 inches long. Ive only had them about a week, so I just want to make sure I do things right. My LFS said everyday, but that seems like a bit much. Is it?

We also have a dwarf lionfish who eats every other day. We have taught him to eat silver sides (bought frozen) They say you should soak them in a special vitamin enriched solution but we haven't done that yet. We use the rosie reds as treats. He will gobble up 3 or 4 at a time if we let him. We like the live food for the benefit of other essential enzymes not found in frozen. It also gives him more exercise to chase down the food. You have to be careful not to overfeed.

Yeah, I was doing a little more research and found about 3 times a week is good for feeding. My dwarf lions re pretty small yet, so they each only need 1 rosy red.

I don't know if you know, but lionfish are glutenous, (not sure of the spelling) which means they don't have a full line, they will litterally eat themselves to death, so be careful. Kin triton, "My lion" just ate soo much the other night he could barely move, I mean he te a silverside that was longer than his overall length, it was funny, he was just sitting on the bottom with a tail sticking out of his mought breathing heavily through his gills. I have noticed they also regurgitate their food as their digestive system isn't as fast as I suspected. Kind of nasty, but definately made the HUGE mass of a stomach go down.

I have just started a FOWLR tank and plan o stock it with a fu man chu lionfish so I have started doinf a lot of research on this fish. I have read in many articles that they should have a varied diet and that rosies really don't have that much nutritional value. Soaking the silverside in a vitamin supplement is one of your better options with an occasional rosie here and there.

You really need to ditch the Rosie Reds. If you have to go the live route (while trying to convert to frozen) guppies are at least a little better choice. Rosey Reds, besides not being nutritional complete for the marine fish, have an enzyme in them called Thaiaminase. It's an enzyme that breaks down Thaimine (Vitamin B1) and can cause neurological problems in your lion.

I currently have 5 lions, a male/female dwarf pair, Fu Manchu, Hawaiian and a volitan. I feed them on Mon., Wed and Fri. All mine are on frozen foods, but I trained them using guppies.
