I have a porcupine puffer. From what I understand you can not put puffers together(it doesn't matter which kind)or they will kill each other. One puffer with an eel should be fine.

You may make them all mad and then they would all puff up and your tank will float away...haha.

LOL.

Can you mix a puffer with a lionfish? In my 55 I am wanting to put a zebra lionfish and a Vallentini puffer.

I had a Dogface puffer and a porcupine puffer that were best of friends for over a year.

I would be comfortable mixing puffers as long as they are the same size.

i have a porcupine puffer, dwarf lion, and a humu all in the same 50 gal. tank and they all get along good together. it's really important that you talk to someone at a pet store that knows what they are talking about(with puffers). it's not a good idea to put puffers in the same tank together.

All I am saying is that in my experience I have has success. I would talk to more members on this site and do more research on your own.

Remember the "Pet Store" is a business. Sometimes the employees don't have years of experience that you can find on this site and talking to other "reefers" with actual experience.

Good Luck!

I have experience. And I do not need to talk to other members like I don't know what i'm doing. I have researched this from the very begining. I admire people who take chances. But I personally would not waste money just to see what could possibly happen. When you are telling people that it's ok to put puffers together, you also need to let them know that they might not be compatable. Pet stores usually do a good job in having people that know what they are talking about. Keep in mind there may be people on this site that may not know what they are talking about. Like I said I have experience, i'm just new to this site. So there's not reason for disrespect or sarcasm.

I would say as long as you mix the same size. and give them there own space to have for themselves. I would not put 4 in a 90 gallon. maybe more like 150.
A small snowflake eel should be just fine with some larger puffers. just make sure you know how big it is going to get. I have seen some pretty big eels in aquariums.

p.s I also agree with babedolle about disrespect. make sure what you say is respectful of others.(even if you disagree with what they said)

Like several posts above, i too express great caution in mixing puffers. All situations are differant. Like above tank size matters, the type of puffers matter, how you introduce them, They need to be as close in size as pos. if you chose to go that way, I'd get a larger tank for it. Just like some people think figure 8 puffers are brackish water, and some think u should add more salt slowly as they grow untill they are at full salt. You will have to, in the end, trust your judgment on how well you know behavioral patterns. If you know that and give each fish room and research compatibility. You are more likely to have sucesses .
My puffer is alone and has twenty g. just for him and i don't want to risk anything untill i get a larger puffer tank and will have the same kind more then likely. love porcupine puffers and fig.8. Lots of people do have luck in getting puffers that are nicer then most, though im sure they can defend there self. As they age and mature they often start to define territories and if enough space is not provided, they will start to fight over the given space.
Alone But Not Lonely

The link might help more then me, but remember that like all dogs act differant so do puffers. the main reason puffers nip is thought to be lessended by giving them a large amount of snails. make sure they have something to peck at then each other. I breed ram-horn and mystery snail. the ram snails breed at fast rate and I have a tank just for them.
Good luck
p.s.
"I would not put 4 in a 90 gallon. maybe more like 150. " I agree

the link says they will eat all tank mates. I disagree a lot. i put a damsel in there and he did't eat it. they stayied in there for a month with no inguree at all. I didn't like my puffer having less room though so i took the damsel out. in a larger tank they whould hace done well, other people thought puff would eat the damsel and with good reason. that it why u need to know the temperment of your fish instead of the species as a whole. I'm not saying to ignore what information saysbut, IMO puffers act differantly and have unique personalitys.

1. When I said "reefers with actual experience" I was meant other than peolple who work at the LPS".

2. When I said in my experience I was only refering to experience's that I have had. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

I have never shown anyone disrespect on this site and I didnt' mean any for you.

Sorry for the confusion...

I would have to now say it is not a good idea to mix any puffers. We have had a striped puffer in our 100g for around 2 years now. He is only about 6 inches long and is very calm. Around 3 months ago we got a pocupine puffer around half the size of the striped puffer and they have been doing very well with each other. Well recently one night they just started to go at it. We thought maybe it was just a disagreement and within a day or so it will go away. Well 2 days passed and the pocupine just keeps going after the striped puffer to the point where the striped puffer is pretty much beaten up and is bleeding around the mouth. We basically had to seperate them. They remind me of triggers. One day everything will be okay and everything is calm and then they just get nasty with each other and start bitting everything. I would not recommend mixing them exp. in a small tank.

I have a dog-faced puffer and a valentini in the same tank and they never bother each other. I wouldn't put the same type of puffers together though - like the ones you are describing (other tobies). I have read that they will fight with other tobies. Just a suggestion.

Ok here is my 2 cents on puffers in the wild and in the tank. Diving for 20 years now, I have seen more puffers than I could possibly count. Most puffers especially the big boys (and girls) are solo only to come together for an occasional singles night at the local fish bar. I have seen a few, usually smaller puffers or boxfish, in closer quarters with each other but really in the wild they are very spread out. So when you think about a tank it seems like a lot to ask them to share the space.

But I have no doubt that you can find similar fish able to share a sizable tank just fine. I know, way back, I had a great brackish water tank that held 6 green spotted puffers that never fought with each other at all (now the poor archer fish and scats that shared the tank with them may have had another thing to say but it was a fun tank).

Good luck!

Cheers,
E
