| What I have read is that when having more than one tang in a tank you are supposed to add them all at the same time. Now you have a much larger tank, so I am not sure if that rule still applies, but typically tangs will fight with eachother when in smaller quarters.

| What you probably wanna do is PM jvharding, he has 5 tangs in a 75 gallon tank and they are all one big happy family. |
| ||||
| I added each of my 5 tangs at separate times, and they co-exist beautifully right now. I don't want to push it, but I love Tangs and would fill my tanks with each different type if I could. |

| Hi Tangs Rule The size of the tank is 10ft X 1.5ft X 2.5ft (approx 280gal) and I an in the process of inserting it into the wall. I am currently building the stand. Will upload pics ASAP. I was initially going to go with an aggressive FOWLR, but decided to fill the tank up with as many tangs as possible. I think the tangs would love the length of the tank. My ideal tank mates would be (based on availability): Yellow tang(Zebrasoma flavescens), Sailfin Tang(Zebrasoma veliferum), Achilles tang(Acanthurus achilles), Power Blue(Acanthurus leucosternon), Hippo Tang(Paracanthurus hepatus), Blue Tang(Zebrasoma xanthurum), Lipstick Tang(Naso lituratus). I would then maybe add two large angels...say an Emperor and a Majestic angel. Are those too many tangs in one tank? What would their compatibility be like? TANGS A LOT! |

| A good rule I have found with housing tangs is to have 3 or more when of the similar shape! 2 of the same shape may fight once in awhile but it is possible to get them to coexist I was able too! Your tank is large enough if you have plenty of grazing rock work for hiding places. This will help as well. Certain tangs prefer high current areas of the tank so try to have enough areas in the tank to keep them happy. good luck. Lets See Them Tangs

| Thanks for that jvharding. What about the order of introducing the tangs? Any order of preference? |

| i've had a scopas tang for a while and i recently added a yellow tang and now all they do is fight. should i add a third tang so they can have a 3 way fight? if so should it be another yellow? the scopas tang is more aggressive and keeps the yellow in the corner. they are about the same size too. |

| Ive have a question. Does anyone have exp with sohal tangs, ive been looking into getting one, and want to know what you guys think. Ive been reading tht they can get rather aggress. but am also tld there wonderful fish. john |

| You'd have not problem at all with all those tangs and the angels, but the biggest problem could be the 2 angels. I have over 1,000 gallons of water, and have always had trouble with 2 large angels in the same tang. But check out one of my 150's, I have a blonde naso, a vlamingi, a unicorn, an organge shoulder, a purple, a yellow and a black tang. that's 7 tangs and they do not fight. Quote:

| With all my tangs, I purchased a power head that is magnetic and can be placed anywhere in the tank so the water current is much greater. Quote:

| Scopas tangs are the most aggressive of all tangs that shape. I would add a 3rd tang and would either add a purple tang (if its in your budget) or a larger yellow tang. Quote:

| John, The Sohal Tang is one of my 2 favorite fish (along with the male watanabei angel) and I've had 2 of them. Unfortuantely, I have had to bring both back to where I got them. They become aggressive (one destroyed my orbic batfish) and very territorial. If another fish enters their hiding spot, that fish is in trouble. I had a 4 inch sohal rough up an 8 inch clown trigger. I'd be wary of placing one in the tank and if you do, certainly do not add any fish after the sohal. Mike |

| i got a sailfin tang. the scopas was only aggressive towards the smaller sailfin for the first week but now he ignores the sailfin. the scopas and the yellow still fight but not nearly as much now that i have 3 tangs. wow i love tangs i wish i could add like 3 more. |

| I have a Sailfin tang and recently added a Hippo tang to a 75 gallon fish only aquarium, and the Sailfin went straight after her. I have a lot of live rock so the Hippo is able to hide from him, but once she comes out he darts straight at her. I've heard about introducing them at the same time and I've also heard about keeping them in odd numbers. Tangs are funny they just kinda do what they want. I've seen a Yellow and a Sailfin together in one tank perfectly fine and then you could take the Sailfin out and put it in a different tank with a different Yellow and they will fight. I've also seen Tangs in even numbers so it just has a lot to do with size, the kind of tang, and when you introduce them I think. I'm going to possibly try and add another similar sized tang to the tank and see how it goes. Most likely a Naso. Are there any recommendations or advice? Or should I just wait and monitor and see if they settle down? |

| Just an update... In my 280g tank thus far I have a Vlamingii(18cm), Hippo (12cm)and Red sea Sailfin tang(14cm). The Vlamingii is the ruler of the 10ft as he was my first fish and had the whole tank to itself for two whole weeks. When I introduced the Hippo and Sailfin at the same time, it ignored the hippo and went straight for the Sailfin. The fighting has subsided over the past week or so, but i tell you what that sailfin can holds it own and with all that intimidation, it still goes for that nori on the veggie clip even if the vlamingii is there. Next fish is the yellow and lipstick tang. I have been told that I should buy them much smaller and introduce them at the same time, so if there is any intimidation from the current inhabitants, it will be spread 50/50 amongst them(if the one gets chased, the other can take a break) and they will be able to hide in crevices the bigger ones cannot get to. GO TANGS! Last edited by Coolibabes; 09-03-2008 at 06:59 PM.. |

| Ok, so I recently set up a 150 gallon tank in a doctors office close to my house. He gave me full discression as to what went in the tank. After letting the tank cycle for 3 months, I added 3 tangs (Yellow, purple and desjardini sailfin.) With over 200 lbs of live rock, the fish ignored each other. I then added a blonde naso tank, vlamingi, unicorn and orange shoulder (yes, very similar to one of my tanks). That's 7 tangs, and we're not done. We then also added a hippo tang, clown tang, and a mustard tang. That's 10 tangs with no other fish at all. And they are all co-existing beautifully!! Go figure. |

| Thats a lot of tangs in that tank....perhaps too many.

| Perhaps, I can see why you think so. But so far so good. The yellow, mustard, purple and desjardini don't bother each other at all, and they are all exactly the same shape. The same goes for the blonde naso, vlamingi and unicorn. Eventually these fish will outgrow the 150 because of how many there are, but at that point the fish will be donated to a local zoo or aquarium. Currently, none of the fish are bigger than 4 inches. |

| Im not concerned about them getting along becase many tangs actually like to schoool together in nature, I was just more concerned about their size in that tank. One or two would be fine, but 10!!!???

| I agree...sometimes bad things happen slowly in a salt tank. Good amount of flow, good skimmer, great maintainance it will fly for a while. |
| ||||
| There is a very strong filtration system on the tank along with the protein skimmer and I have a strong flow for them to swim against. It's a tang friendly set up. |

The tank is monitored very closely. I'm sure any problems will be caught before it snowballs into a huge problem. |

| Send us some pics when you get a chance. The tangs are great! |

| Just read this thread and thought about my 110 and how its a lil over crowded with fish and seems to not be doing the greatest, so i order a 180 to make a better home for these fishes. For tangs i have 2 yellow, 1 purple, 1 atlantic blue, 1 scopus, 1 hippo, 1 naso. also have, 1 long nose hawk, 1 six line wrasse and 1 perc clown. As well as one big green britle and 1 blue linkia star, oh and 1 coral banded shrimp and let not forget my almost changing to dult koran angel witch i will be selling or donating to a zoo or store as i bought it when it was tiny and now its getting big and he like to pick on my corals and has destroyed a few over the last 2 years Now i know have have gone a lil over bored with the tangs, but i love them and i want more so i have deside to upgrade to a 180 witch is going in my basement wall and it have starphire glass on the front with dual over flows and im going to put a big sump and refugium on it so that it will have very good filtration and i wont run into problems, i think the problem with my tank now is my san bed isnt deep enough and i have to many fish and the system cant keep up so right now i have to do large water changes weekly, im doing 25 gallons a week heres some pics too of my tank, there a few months old havnt had time for recent ones yet
