I recently purchased a package of Bio-Pure frozen Mysis Shrimp distributed by Hikari Sales
Inc. from my local dealer. It has additives such as polyphosphate and panlothenic acid. Can this contribute to phosphate build up in the tank even though I am using a carbon media filter especially designed to eliminate phosphate and silicant? I have a problem with diatom algae. I have been feeding the mysis once a day being careful not to add the liquid to the tank.

I do regular water changes and use RO water. I use a baster to clean the rock and vacumn up debris. I add a buffer at changes and add trace. I have a 55 gallon uni aquarium with live rock and live sand. Everything in the tank is doing well except for controlling the diatom. I keep the temp at 78 degrees.

Polyphosphate is an inorganic compound that is used for binding metals. When polyphosphate is added to your aquarium it can be broken down into orthophosphate which feeds the algae blooms. Pantothenic acid is just biotin or a type of B5 vitamin. You can just wash the food, cool RO/DI water is best.
