Default Understanding?!

I'm extreamly new to the salt water thing, trying to figure all of thise out.

My roommate has the green little balls all over his coral, they look like puss balls.

He also has the balls that look like mercury.

What are they, and what do they do?

Mercury? Are they on the underside of his rock? More than likely nitrogen bubbkles and those are super normal. Green balls, probably bubble algae. Not very desirable. Your roommate could get an emerald crab for the green bubbles but he could also learn how to carefully siphon them out.

If siphoning the bubble algae try not to break the bubbles. That will spread the spores & there will be more bubble algae.

Ok the bubble algae makes sense.

But on his coral he has small perfectly round balls that look like mercury, obviously it's not because it wouldn't stick, but I am just wanting to know what I am looking at?

Thanks,
Bill

See what rlcline wrote earlier - more than likely those bubbles are nitrogen.

But I thought nitrogen was only in the sand bed, and when they work to the top they just bust like anything else?

This is on the coral it self.

Thanks,
Bill

I don't get it on my coral, but it is not limited to the bed, you could also be seeing it on the live rock.

Are you getting any microbubbles from the skimmer escaping into the tank? They could be getting hung up on the corals. The same holds for any ph you might have in the tank.
