Default 2nd setup tank gone wrong...

Hello Reefbuilders!

First off all, this is an excellent site. Lots of feedback, questions, and answers. Wouldn't be happier anywhere else. I just started cycling my 2nd tank and everything went back on the second week. It all happen when I was watching the UCLA vs Kansas game. Go Bruins! But anyways, when the game was over; I heard a strange noise. I thought it was the door, but it wasn't. To my surprise my tank cracked. I have a 55 gallon glass tank. Since I live in an apartment, I couldnt go any bigger. Not only do I have 125 lbs of live sand, 80 lbs of live rock, but I now have an eight inch crack along the back-side. Just my luck. I called up my friends and donated the sand and rock to them. I plan to set another tank up soon. I'll go acrylic this time.

Did you level your tank before filling it and during filling the tank this will make a tank crack! Also highly recommend not going with the acrylic tank These tanks do not stand the test of time they bow and scratch easily. I had 150 gallon acrylic it was a mess when I took it down!

yes sir, the tank is properly leveled. Set up was nice and clean. It was cycling and signs of nitrate was starting. Two weeks in it cracked. Not much more I can say. I had an acrylic tank before, so I know what u mean by panels bending/bow effect. I prefere glass mainly of the wide open space. If I find a better price for another glass tank, I might just do it.

Warranty, on tank was it new? My Oceanic has or had 5 year warranty on it. I think its over 5 years old now. Just a thought I really think the Oceanic Tanks are worth the extra money.

sorry to hear your tank cracked, my only guess for the cause was an uneven/unlevel tank...

very weird indeed

six foot level baby!!!! you wouldn't think it but on a larger tank just 1\16 of an inch out can put undo pressure on the glass with everything full. also on the other tank it coulp have been a flaw in the glass or a small chip. kind of like a peck on a windshield, don't see it until yu turn the defrost on and watch it grow. acrylic can have its own flaws like scratching and warping but it is uer preferance. for an appartment i might consider acrylic for deposit purposes.
