Default Saltwater Fanatic in TX

Hi everyone!

My husband got me started on saltwater tanks. He first converted his 55 gallon into saltwater (YouTube - Broadcast Yourself., search mestupidcat).

After making the mistake of adding what I wanted to his tank, I realized I should create my own made-made ocean so I could add whatever I want.

I started with a 5 gallon hex and added a new 100 gph power filter, nano fission protein skimmer, a 10 watt coralife power compact bulb, added saltwater, 10 lbs of live sand, and about 6 lbs of live rock. Current inhabitants are a 1.25" maroon clown and a peppermint shrimp.

This is just the beginning for me; this hobby now gobbles up my check every week.

When my husband switched to saltwater, I inherited his freshwater fish. Now that I am finding them homes (people who would appreciate them more), I am freeing up the other tanks to convert to saltwater.

This week I cleaned out the former freshwater 20 gallon and stock power filter, and filled the tank with saltwater and 20 lbs live sand. This weeks' check will get me some live rock and soon this will become the clown's new (still temporary home).

After I rehome two pacus (to a girl with a 300 gallon tank!), I'll then have my 55 gallon tank to convert, and this will become my maroon clownfish's permanent home (Yay!)

Fish are just so peaceful to watch; I thought this with freshwater too. It has a calming effect to anyone watching. What I enjoy is dropping a little frozen block of brine shrimp in for the clown to eat. He's awesome! After I move the clown to a bigger tank, I'll take the 5 gallon to work or everyone to enjoy, maybe put some of the smaller, orange clowns in.

Thanks for reading- any suggestions welcome!!

-Jen

Hi Sarha,

Thanks for reading.

Yup, maroon clowns just stuck on me. I'll love to watch this guy grow up to full size.. I'll bet he'll have an attitude by then.. haha. That's what everyone says; maroon clowns have a rep for being mean as they get older.

Happy fishkeeping!! Show me some of your fish if you want, I'd like to see!

my maroon was very agressive especially after i gave it a bubble tip anemone. after the anemone was added he killed every thing in the tank before i could find homes for them. so he had his own home and he liked it that way

Wow. That's crazy. What all did he kill (so I know best not to add- at least not with anemone)? I probably won't add an anemone; I wouldn't want it getting sucked into the filter or skimmer. How big was he/still have him? Link me a pic/vid clip if you can. Mine is on my YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (mestupidcat); the most recent video.

i had him in a 29 gallon aquarium so he thought the whole tank was his. he chased out a banggi cardnalfish {spelling} chased out meaning harased until it jumped out of the tank. I tried to pair her but that was a mistake I did however get that one back to the store there was one other one but i can't remember i lost him 2 years ago we lost power in our town for 5 days, snowed in so i couldn't get a battery operated air pump i was devistated and miss her very much i had her for almost 3 years and was part of the family.

Hi there Mayor! Thank you!

**

Sarha, I'm sorry that happened to your fish. Wow. That's the experience knowledge we were talking about. At least other's might learn from your experience so you could be helping some other cardinalfish from getting put into a maroon clown's tank. Man, electricity going out is bad stuff we SHOULD all be prepared for, cause you never know what to expect/when it could happen. I read on a freshwater forum that if your electricity goes out you can help circulate water by scooping water from tank with a bucket and pouring it back in about every hour. That's should work for at least 24 hours, so at least there's oxygen in the water.. Thanks for sharing. I learned not to put ANY fish with a fimbriated moray eel, not even a stingray. He'll eat or kill everything. Learned this the hard way too.
