Hello. I inherited this tank when a business was closed down and the tank needed a home. I said ok not knowing what I was taking on. I don't know what I am doing, the things I have done have been trial and error. I am on fixed income from the state and I don't have much money to pay for maintenence (the last call was 150.00) and the only call I was able to make.
The problem know is that my filter is not working, there is hair algae covering everything. I have about 5 fish and various coral and rocks.

What I am asking is there anyone out there in San Diego or groups of volunteers that can come and assess the tank, help me get whatever is needed and either keep maintaining it at an affordable rate or get rid of it. I honestly can tell you that I don't seem to be doing an ok job let alone a great job in maintaining it myself. I would be happy to release this tank to someone who knows what they are doing and are passionate about also, I am afraid I am not that person, I am just really frustrated.
please advise soonest....any help appreciated but I must say time is of the essence.

We'd all love to help I'm sure. Tell us a bit about the tank. For starters, how long has it been set up, what are your water parameters (pH, salt, Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate). This can be done buy taking a water sample to your trusted lfs and they will most of the time do it for free. How much live rock, amount and type of substrate, and livestock do you have?

The fustration you feel means you have passion about keeping the tank. If you were not fustrated you'd chuck it in the back yard, and call it a day.

Well...hair alage is going to be a result of very high nutrients in your water. With out useing some sort of RODI unit it might be tough to start combating this issue. Try a Sea Hare...They will graze like goats! Just try one.

Also up your Ph a tad.. Do you know where that is now?
