Default my first reef tank

hello everyone!
Ive just changed from a fish only system to a berlin style reef tank, its a 100 gal tank with 70kg of fuji live rock. i have cured the rock my self in the tank and its at that stage now were the algee is growing and its not that plesant to look at, but as i keep reading its part of the cycle and it will clear up by its self. is there a way to resolve the problem apart from time? one more ? with an ro system do you always have to have it running to stop the filter drying out or can you set it up any other way?
thanks
David

A good clean up crew will really help control algae. Turbo snails, nassurius snails, hermit crabs etc. Be sure you are using RO/DI water. Check your water perameters...

My RO system is designed to shut off. I have it runnng a few hours or so each week. If it is off too long dump the first few gallons...

Thanks for your reply!

I have always used ro water even the 100 gal to first fill the tank, i buy the water from my local dealer but its a pain to be honest. i was told by the dealer that if i bought an ro system it had to be left running all the time which would be very un pratical due to the fact im on a water meter!!!!!!! What ro unit are you using? are they easy to set up?
I bought 15 turbo snails and 5 red leg hermits over 2 weeks ive lost 3 snails, is that nomal.
all my water tests have been spot on

Thanks for your help

David

Lots of people use MightyMite RO/DI and are very happy with it. I have one from Abundantflow (got it off e-bay) and it works fine. There are several ways of hooking them up. Many will attach to a your sink spiout or to a hose spigot etc..
As for losing snails, I bought 6, and think I still have all 6 - I have lots of lr so can't always see them. Are you sure they are dead or just hiding?

I only recommend MightyMite for small tanks. For 120 gallons, I imagine there is a must better system.

Welcome to RB!!!
