| Canister filters are a big no-no for saltwater aquariums. That is like putting diesel fuel into a gasoline engine. In time nitrates will skyrocket because of the canister filters killing your fish. I would take those canister filters back asap.

| I love my emperor but I know almost every reefer here will say otherwise. |

| hey guys im a little confused, the fluval can run mechanical (sponge), and then if you want just fill the compartments with matrix, de-nitrate, some phosguard and purigen, and you have the perfect filter system? how can the external filters hurt the fish or be anything but beneficial. |
| ||||
| The sponge and other media become nitrate sinks which can cause bad things to happen chemistry wise with your water. They are fine if used as a media reactor of sorts with carbon, phosphate, or nitrate removal media. Not as a bio filter. Live rock and good skimmer accomplish the filtration part. |
| ||||
| thats a good point, not to mention a rapid increase in phosphates due to rotting matter thats stuck in the sponge. however realistically you can just make sure that the sponge is cleaned regularly to remove waste and it should be fine, complimenting with live rock. I've known skimmer and sump-less filtrations methods to work, just live rock and a wet-dry drip filter (with cotton, carbon, and bio media). |
