Default new to reef build,,,,, need some advice on yashia goby.

Hi everyone,

I signed up to this forum to share experiences and to gather some insight on life in the tank.

I have a questions maybe some of you guys out there had the same problem.. I have a 20 gal reefegium, and I have a pistol shrimp paired up with a yashiya goby (white ray goby). This little guy (goby) is always getting out of his cave at night into the open water...I thought it was because of a light leak, so I covered the tank hoping it will take care of this, but he was still in the open water at night...any Ideas??

There is not much rock in the reefegium tank, but I have plenty in the main tank. if I make a better environment with caves will he still get out into the open water at night??

I never see my shrimp goby unless he is playing watchout for my shrimp or he is ready to eat.

If there is nothing predatory in the refugium, I would not worry about where this fish is swimming at night.

I had to rescue the yashiya goby from the sea urchine already, he was traped in between the spikes; so I took a clean chop stick and got him out of there. I took that sea urchin and threw it in my sump.... man was that a mistake puting a sea urchin in the reefegium. I still cant belief that he is alive, he was stunned for the whole day, he is better , looking out for the shrimp.

I have a feeling that I need to make caves in there... I dont like the Idea of him sleep swimming at night,,,, these guys are really tiny, and look so pretty. I would hate to loose him, you really have to make the best to make them comfortable.

I have a blue line shrimp goby in my main tank with a tiger pistol shrimp. These guys have a whole underground tunnel system. They are in one cave, then theya are on the other side of the tank the next minute in a different cave.

I have to say that one of the favorite animals I have in the reef tank is theose guys....(masons of the reef).

lol, I have 2 pistol shrimp and one shrimp goby. I have to admit, they can be more interesting than the rest of the tank.

But it is paired with the shrimp any other time?

I looked at them this morning, and to my surprize, it looks like they were working extra hard at night to make a nice little castle. I did not think that these guys can work at night... they are still up now, and they are still working on making thier fortress...

I want to put another shrimp goby in the reefegium.... anyone have any suggestions? I would like to get something that is rare, the yashiya gobys are like $60.00, this is the most expensive goby I have seen out there. I'm not sure why, but the price is pretty high.

I haev to say this guy has been through hell, and he is very tough for his size. The shrimp is bigger than him.... yashiya gobys ROCK!!
