Default Small White Star Fish Resembles A Sepent Sea Star

Can any one tell me if the little star fish is bad ? It is the size of maybe a pencil eraser. It resembles the serpent sea star body and is white. I only saw it for a second befor it retreated in to a rock. I do have a blue linkia sea star, but this has a totally different body shape. I have not added any thing new to my tank for about a year. So i am not sure where it came from since it is so tiny

I have some of these in my tank, I had bought some new live rock, and a few weeks later there were about 7 of these guys, have not seen any lately, and have no ideal if they are good or bad.

A general rule of thumb for starfish, the thicker the arms the more predatory the starfish. A lot of arms will also indicate a predatory starfish. I am sure there are exceptions to this rule somewhere, but for the reef tank it usually works. I would keep an eye on it for while. (If you can find it again )

Probably Asterina Starfish. Some people have claimed to witness them eating coral tissue; however, I have hundreds of the things, and have never witnessed them anywhere but on the glass of my tank eating algae. These are a very common hitchhiker if this is what you're speaking of.

Is this your guy?

Here's a link to some faqs. AsterinaFAQs

I'm sorry, I misread your post!! I didn't see that you said it looked like a serpant star. Those I'm not sure about. I do; however, have some mini brittle stars in my tank. They are white also, and have longer stringier legs. Kind of like a serpant, but with little spines sticking off of them. To my knowledge they are harmless, and will probably ultimately die off. Hope that helps.
