Default Starfish problem!

I purchased an orange starfish (do not remember the name, but it is orange with black dot on the end of each arm) 3 days ago and I noticed today that half of one of it's arms is missing on the topside. Any thoughts?

Yo Paps,

What are the inhabitants of your display? Any territorial semi-aggressive to predator fish? How about your water parameters? What kind of supplements do you dose? Starfish will shed their limbs when under very stressful conditions. Either its something in your tank, or something in your water.

Water checks good. I have 2 false percula clowns, 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 green chromis, 2 gold head sleeper gobies, 1 hippo tang, 1 McCokers wrasse, a paired yashai gobie w/pisttol shrimp!

Hmm, not a very aggressive group I see. Have you observed the Tang, Wrasse, or Shrimp showing aggression towards the starfish at all? Also, if the Clowns are paired, they become very territorial and may show aggression towards the starfish. My two paired Clowns will nip and flick their tails at any fish that get to close to their corner.

No! The clowns are very happy. They show no signs of being territoral. I have never seen anything nipping at the starfish. The chronis do, and I do not know if you would call it nipping, but one of them brushes up against the Hippo. Other than that, I have no clue.

Thanks!

How big is the starfish and where did you buy it? If from a LFS, how long was it in their tank before you buying it? Many starfish that are reef safe are really sensitive to being moved between tanks and shipping.

Just a note, starfish have the ability to reproduce from an appendage. so if you can find the missing appendage and take care of it you may end up with 2 of them.
