Default Is Iodine supplement hurting my invertebrates?

We have been putting a iodine supplement in our tank once a week for awhile. Since then my brittle star fish had opened at the top of his disk (He has since fixed himself) and lost a leg (Not back yet) and one of my feather dusters had lost it's head and slowing was growing back. Now both feather dusters are dead. I thought they were really hardy. The only fish I have in the tank is a clown fish and several hard and soft corals as well as live rock. What do you think is going wrong? This all started after the supplements started. I think that is the problem but boyfried says no??

Thanks,
Melisia

You probably do not need to use iodine, even if it didn't cause the reaction. Even the most reef safe meds/additives for your tank can cause problems for our 5 legged loved ones. Did you, or your loved one, add anything else to the tank...even a couple of days before the crap hit the fan?

There are many things that could be hurting your inverts like your fish, critters, or other things within your water column. Iodine can do a lot of harm if overdosed. I wouldn't dose Iodine without testing it with a good (salifert) test kit to know exactly what your levels are. About the only coral that I have seen that Iodine really benefits for long term success is Xenia. Inverts need some iodine for molting, but there should be enough iodine provided by your water changes for molting.

I agree! The water changes are the most effective for just about everything unless you have something that ABSOLUTELY depends on iodine. Good luck!

We did'nt add anything else. I agree with everyone because our tank was doing great without the supplements. I'm going to hide the iodine from him. LOL

Thanks everyone.
