Default Sea Hare

OH MY GOD...you guys were right...i saw my 1st sea slug yesterday. i thought it would be this small little slug....took us 5 mins to find it and it was sitting right in front of our faces....that thing was soooooo big and ugly, it was great. i want one so bad but not one that big for my 29gallon. are they sold at a relatively small size or not? i just gotta have one..even if i can only keep it for a while and then return it or trade it.

LiveAquaria.com has ones that are between 2-4 inches for 17 dollars. Just make sure that an LFS will take it once you cant have it anymore.

never fear....i decided to visit oceans and seas LFS to see if they had any sea hares in stock. well, they had a few and they were nice and small, just like i wanted, maybe a couple inches versus the one i saw friday night that was the size of a baseball almost. i think the guy at the store made a mistake because everyplace and everyone i spoke with said they costed at least $29, but he only charged me $19. i dropped that sucker in and he is going right to work. i am going to supplement him with some veggie round tablets, maybe some algae sheets, etc etc. we shall see. so cool to watch though, they are so slow but so quick at the same time. everytime i look over at my tank he is someplace else working like the soldier he is. here is a pic of him.

I was just reading about these critters the other day.@ things about them struck me.There very rapid growth rate, and there moderatly short life span.maybe it wont be anle to grow to the size of a volkswagon lol.

They have vorcious appetites, and it is very difficult to provide them with enough food in the average aquarium. Most of them starve. I've collected up some info on them here. Sea Hares - Reef Builders - New England Reef Forum

u may be right....i put him in last night and he was crusing around...i have yet to see him today. there are only so many spots to hide and even though he blends in pretty well, if you look long enough you can always see him moving. oh where, oh where has OSCAR gone!!!!!!

OSCAR is alive and kicking. they blend in so well with the live rock its like WHERE'S WALDO!!! i was able to get my LFS to give me a few pieces of their fake corals in their tanks that was just overgrown with hair algae. they let me take them home, OSCAR was in heaven. he was moving right along, mowing down the grass and leaving his lil waste droppings behind him...he reminds me of a street painter..you know those trucks that go down the road and paint the white segmented stripes....except he is not really painting and they arent white!!!!

he is really ugly, but i like him. fun to watch him climb to the top of the tank, then for no reason sometimes he just lets go and drops to the ground...like he is bungee jumping.

I would only get one if you were only gonna have it for a few days in a 30g. There are some animals that are best left in the ocean and IMO this is one of those animals, UNLESS you CAN provide it with enough to eat on a daily basis. And as Anothony would always say......just my 2 cents..

oh I totally agree with you elliott...I was considering a mandarin for my 30 as a "centerpiece" fish but have been told their better off in 100+ tanks. Due to the fact that they tend to "graze" the pods in your tank so even having a built in refugium wouldn't really help all that much.

i have offered mine up for people to borrow if they need their tank cleaned out from the dreaded HAIR ALGAE MONSTER. just let me know if you live nearby. you can stop by, get aqquainted...his name is OSCAR..he is a cancer, loves sunsets, likes to eat, but has a bit of a slime problem, kind of clingy.
