QUESTION TO THE MASTERS OF THE REEF: Besides the norm of : temp, SG, ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity (which I have been testing) What else should I be stocking up on now? I know calcium. And strontium. Remember- I only have 1 blue damsel, 2 dominoe damsels, 1 firefish goby, 1 brittle star, 1 6line, 1 emerald crab, several dwarf blues, 1 arrow crab, chestnut turban snail, few nassarius snails and small yellow polyp. What is a good list to start to get on hand as I multiply my stock? I looked on about.com and was given (KH), (phosphate), (O2), (iodine/ iodide), (silicate) (iron)---are these necessary? What is a good supply list to go by. Remeber- plans are to get more fish, inverts, corals.---------ALSO, what type of grass can I start growing now so that it will be ready for a baby tang(s)? THANKS O'MIGHTY REEFMASTERS!!!!!

Grow ulva lettuce (Ulva sp.) in your fuge. tangs and algae eating fish LOVE it.
And it grows fairly fast! Now would be a good time to start growing it, so when you do end up getting the fish that will eat it, you will be able to grow it and get more.

Personally I would test for as much as you can afford. What I mean by that is you should test any and all things that you may dump into your tank that you can test for. One's that I would say you could probably wait on is siliczte, and O2....KH is a defanite in my book...so is iodine since more than likely you'd be dossing that for your corals. Iron..not to sure on quite honestly I don't know how Iron could get into a tank unless it's just trace amounts which would be a was with frequent water changes. Hope this helps.

I would also go with copper. You never know when you will need it.

Like Anthony (or do you prefer Tony?) said, iodine and iodide. Maybe strontium, magnesium, KH, CA, phosphates.

copper is harmful to reef inhabitants....especially inverts.

You dont NEED to test for it, especially if you have an RO unit, but they are 5$ and you never know when youll need it. I would get it just in case, but thats just me.

ok- sounds like a safety measure. I use bottled water- so not really worried about 'bad water'- but like u said- u never know. I think I will just hit petsmart after work each week and pick up 3-4 bottles of something until I have a stockpile ready for anything!

Tonight on the way home from work: (1) coral banded shrimp, (1) green citron goby, and 1 nice rock with 'leafy life' growing on it! Almost got nervous when I tried to lower the rock (about 6lbs) down into the tank. It was dangling about 1 inch over the bed, and my arm couldn't have gotten any further into the tank! I basically didn't breathe until I had it positioned just right- whew! Afraid of dropping it on the tank floor!

YEAH!!! Picked up 3 more rocks (honey comb) and a cleaner shrimp after work! I have a question- the LFS is selling cuttlefish eggs- anyone have any history with these? I think cuttlefish are very cute, and very interesting - BUT aren't they like an octopus where they can shoot ink if scared? Do they need colder water? I am wanting to get an egg and watch it hatch and etc - watching my new little cuttlefish emerge - but I don't want to take the chance of altering my parameters in any way. My water is very very clean- any feedback?
If I can get my camera to cooperate- pics this weekend. PROMISE !

Sounds like it is coming along nicely, can't wait to see some pics!
I did have a question though; most agree that BioBalls are bad and I was told to remove them slowly and replace with liverock similiar to Michelle. If all I have in my tank currently is live rock and water and sand, can I go ahead and fully replace them with live rock? I have no fish or corals yet?
Will this affect the cycling process?

As far as I know it would be ok- because if that is all you have- you wouldn't be hurting anything if a change in test (nitrate) comes back- right anyone? I would say now would be the best time to get it done.
**** Last night: 'baby' sailfin tang. 'baby' yellow tang,and...... a 'baby' bubble tip anenome (about the size of a very large grape!) Ohhhh he is so cute!!! Today I went and got a pack of krill- fed him and he ate so perfectly! The tangs ate right away last night and this morning- everything is going 'swimmingly'. Also today picked up a 'baby' colony of green star polyps- about 10 tiny polyps on the base. Can you guess I am determined to buy small and enjoy watching everything grow! pics tonight......stay tuned....... hahahaha

ok- to recap. 1 sailfin, 1 yellow tang, 1 sixline wrasse, 1 blue damsel, 2 domino damsels, 1 black/gold brittle star, 1 arrow crab, 1 emerald green crab, 1 coral banded shrimp, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 orange chestnut turban snail, several nassarius snails, several dwarf blue hermit crabs, small colony yellow poylps, teeny weeny colony of green star polyps, itty bitty baby bubble tip anenome. I am trying to get the ulva lettuce mentioned for them to nibble. So far the tangs are not going for the seaweed, but they do like the flake w/spirulina. As you can see- lights are good!!! Yeah!!! And I need to work on my coralline. Ok- going to take some pics...........be back shortly.....
